hello Dan, we have been to Paris twice most recently last September. we stayed at Hotel des Allies, 33 rue Berthollet in the 5th, very reasonable(around 300fr). Rooms without bathroom or with. We used hall showers, as rooms with a view only have a washbasin. Not sure whether you'll get in at such short notice though ,try faxing 01.45.35.13.92

I'd recommend the many small hotels in the Rue Cler area. Forum "faves" include Champ de Mars, Muguet, Leveques and mine, La Motte Picquet. None are over $100. USD for a night. This area is quiet and very upscale -- I'm still trying to understand how it can have such inexpensive [and good hotels]. There is nothing "tatty" or rundown about this neighborhood.

There are other hotels in this area that seem as nice and close to the same price range. I have posted else_thread about the convenience of the Ecole Militaire metro station.

Well, if you are going in May 2001 you need to find a hotel service and see if anything is available. If you meant 2002, then it may be worthwhile making suggestions. Get the Nat.Geog. Traveller March (I think) issue for a list of Paris hotels for $100/night.

Dan: I faxed all of the hotels mentioned in the March 2001 National Geographic Traveller on the day it hit the newstands for a June reservation and found every one booked for the time I needed. I agree you need to contact a reservation service to find you anything that is available. Unfortunately we had to spend more than we had planned in order to get a room.We just hope the hotel will be clean and convenient.

I've used www.france.com several times for hotels in Paris and different cities. The reason I like it is because you get a list of hotels *available* in your price category and can book right then. I tried May 12/5 nights and there are several 2-stars available (under $100), including Hotel du Palais Bourbon, which has been praised a lot here (do a search above).

On this site, you get specific room descriptions/prices and comments from people who have stayed there. Hope this helps.

Don't know how long you're staying but if you are going to be there at least 5 days, try www.drawbridgetoeurope.com. They have apts - 1,2,3 bedroom. Sometimes they have openings at the last minute. It is an inexpensive and comfortable way to travel.

We just got back from a one week stay in an apt in the Marais area. I can tell you that the apt was very comfortable and clean. Great location. You can walk to most sights. Good bakeries nearby.
