Paris on New Year's Eve

It depends what you like to do, I think. I dislike NY Eve as a holiday and never do anything on it except watch TV and stay home and go to bed after the noice, whereas others like to party and get drunk, which is another way to go. Even if you choose option B (partying/drunk), there is the private vs public options; I don't like large street crowds on holiday and find them unpleasant and potentially dangerous (espec on Bastille day/4th of July events for some reason), so avoid those also.

Carol - we will also be in Paris on New Year's Eve and have had trouble getting info about what exactly is going on. There is some info on this forum if you run a search, but most of the info I've found is specific to last year's blow out. I do know that the Champs Elysees turns into a pedestrian mall that is jam packed with people. I have also gotten the impression that there are fireworks at the Eiffel Tower at midnight. I don't think that was just for last year. In the Latin Quarter, Boul Mich also turns into a big party street. We are planning on having dinner, then strolling the Champs Elysees before heading over to the Champs de Mars. Our hotel is near the Tower, so we want to be able to walk back without having to worry about transportation. Hope this helps. Please let me know if you are able to find out anything more.

Thanks for the warning, Thomas. I had not been told anything about firecrackers being thrown. Is the avenue as wild earlier in the evening? We certainly don't plan to be there around midnight but did want to stroll after dinner just to experience it.

Carol, Meg: A couple of years ago my teenaged niece and I were with several friends walking along the Champs Elysees right after midnight on New Year's Eve. A large group of drunken boys/men approached us and began groping all the females in the group. My poor niece was pretty traumatized. I still love Paris, but would think twice before venturing there again on New Year's Eve. Have a great time and be careful.

We were there two years ago on New Year's Eve ('98-99), and it seemed pretty civilized. Of course, we didn't go to the Champs Elysees. I would echo that it depends on what you like to do, but you shouldn't have any trouble finding a place to have dinner and then whatever entertainment you like.
It was a lot quieter than what I've seen here in the States, but everyone seemed pretty festive and less reserved than usual.
