paris on a national holiday

My husband and I will be in Paris for 5 days starting May 1. I understand that on national holidays, the city is shut down. Any ideas as to where we might go that first day?

I think churches are usually open, so you could go
to Notre Dame or Sacre Coeur/Montmartre area. Also,
I think the Eiffel Tower is ALWAYS open, even on
Christmas, so you could go over in that area, walk
in the park (Champ de Mars), see the view from the
Tracadero across the river from the Tower, etc.
I'll bet the tourist-oriented things may be open,
like the Bateaux Mouches (boat ride on Seine) --
that could be a good idea, also.

I'm also wondering what Paris will be like for Bastille day (July 14). I was planning to spend that day in the city because I thought there would be all types of activities going on. Has anyone been there during that time? Is it exciting or do I need to make plans to do something else? Thanks!

HELLO: The answer to your question is most places to shop and a lot of restaurants are closed. The touristy things are open. What I usually do is enjoy having the city to myself. As for Bastille Day when I was in college there lots of parades and parties you just have to know how to find them ask around. I am leaving April 29th and will be there for 2 Holidays and one of them we plan to go to Euro-Disney with my family who lives over there. So relax and enjoy that there are no crowds on the Holidays

I've been in Paris for Bastille day about 4-5 times,
and really only participated in the festivities once.
After all, it's really a national holiday, not a
foreigner's one. (I don't even get excited about
the 4th of July, so I don't get excited about another
country's revolution.) But, there should be enough
to do to keep you busy. On July 14th is the parade
down the Champs-Elysees about 10 am and then
there are fireworks that night (10 pm) set off from the
Trocadero, I think (across river from Eiffel Tower).
Good viewing near Champs-de-Mar and nearby
streets in the 7th arrondisement. If you aren't aware,
the parade is strictly a military parade -- not the
kind you may see in the US with bands, floats,
clowns, etc. It is very interesting for that, though,
and I'm glad I saw it once. In other words, it's a
parade of every conceivable kind of French military
personnel (tanks, cavalry, motorcycles, etc.), which
is stretched to include firemen and some others.
They bring out some very old tanks and stuff so
it is actually quite interesting. Aside from that,
there's not much going on that day, but most things
are actually open. There are some street parties/
bals (especially in the fire stations) that
are held the night before, the 13th. Big one is at
the Place de Bastille, and usu. in the Tuileries
Gardens, also -- plus one in every local fire
station, I think. Oh, you can see the parade pretty
well as long as you get there (somewhere along
Champs-Elysees just east of Arc) about 1 hr ahead.
I got off at the Kleber metro stop (I think main stops
along Champs are closed) and got a fairly good
view about 1-2 blocks east of the Arc, getting there
only about 1 hr ahead of start time.

, and then an F-14
flies overhead from the Arc de Triomphe with red,
white,blue exhaust somehow.

We will be in Paris vor VE day, Friday May 8. Are there celebrations such as parades or fireworks we should see, and where would they be. Or is this not a national holiday?

I was in Paris on All Saints Day (1 Oct) - a national holiday, and my friend and I ended up going to the Louvre, which was open, as were the shops in the arcades underneath the museum.

The best thing about Paris is that you can thoroughly enjoy yourself by just walking all over and enjoying the scenery, architecture, and parks and gardens. If you plan to dine on a national holiday, however, hopefully you have selected a hotel with an on site restaurant. If not, it's wise to make reservations at hotels with restaurants.
