Peg:
My wife and I just returned from our first visit to Paris. We had reservations at the Grandes Ecoles (01 43 26 79 23) which was recommended to us by a couple of different people. Our plans changed at the last minute and they didn't have any rooms available for us on the new dates so we didn't actually stay there, but as I say, it was recommended by several people.

We ended up at Le Notre Dame Hotel (01 43 54 20 43). Stayed there four nights, the first two in a postage stamp room on the third floor with no view - that was all they had available - second two nights on the sixth floor, corner room, with two dormer windows, hand-hewn beams, and an incomperable view of Notre Dame and the Seine.

Room was still small and had a tub with a hand-held shower, but had a mini-bar, TV, good bed, decent closet space (compared to a lot of European hotels), clean, very quiet considering busy location. Very friendly, English-speaking staff, helpful with directions, tour arrangements, etc. Cost was about $125 a night for the good room. Nice in-room breakfast for about $6 each.

Hotel is on the edge of the Latin Quarter - lots to do at night, lots of restaurants and shops in the immediate area. Directly across from Notre Dame, easy walk to the Louve and other sites. Don't have anything else in Paris to compare to, but compared to other hotels in Europe that we've stayed at, I'd recommend it.

Have a great trip!

Peg; I have posted this info a couple of times already, but I'll be glad to do it again if it may help...My husband & I stayed last summer at The Muguet Hotel. Located in 7th arrondissement, nearby the Eiffel Tower, Musee D'Orsay, Rodin Museum, Trocadero and the Invalides. The rate was about $100/night (breakfast included), worth it to me because the neighborhood is absolutely wonderful (post office, restaurants, parks...). the room was comfortable, very clean, and the street was very quiet at night.
Their website is http://france-hotel-guide.com/h75007muguet.htm. E-mail me if you need more details.
We just returned from Paris and we stayed at the Hilton (on the border of the 7th and 15th). We had a large room with a full view of the Eiffel Tower. We loved the hotel and they were so helpful in making arrangements for us to go places, answering any and all of our questions (they spoke perfect English), I would highly recommend this hotel. Great area and good restaurants near by after some exhausting days walking the city (we never ate at the hotel though because it seemed too "pricey" and there were so many great places near by that were much more affordable) I especially loved waking up each morning to my USA TODAY which was delivered to the room....spoken by a true American huh?

My husband and I spent 4 days in Paris in August as part of our 10th Anniversary trip. I must first say that Paris is the most romantic, beautiful city in the world. With that said, we arrived at CDG at noon and took a taxi to our wonderful hotel, Prince de Conti. We couldn't believe our luck to have such a lovely, small hotel with great decor and lovely English speaking attendants. Smack in the middle of all the sites, this 6th arrondisement, St. Germain des Pres hotel is 1/2 block from the Seine, 5 minute walk to Notre Dame, the Louvre, and Musee D'Orsay. In the evenings, the St. Germain/Latin Quarter is a wonderful location to many wonderful local restaurants and cafes, like Cafe Deux Magot where Hemingway hung out. You can walk around without going far from the hotel. The hotel itself is an 18th century bldg. recently renovated with a courtyard and lovely breakfast room/lounge downstairs. Our first room was small, but wonderfully decorated with toile fabric on the walls and ceiling and a view of the dome from the School of Fine Arts. The bathrooms are also small but are 100% new and clean, which means more to me than size. Hair dryers are included. Our last night we were upgraded to a larger room with a living area at no charge. Our cost was $158 per night incl. breakfast and tax. Sorry to run on - you can tell we enjoyed our stay. Also, if you go to the Loire, I've got a fantastic recommendation for a B&B. Feel free to email if I can answer any other questions. Bon chance!
We love the Hotel des Grandes Ecoles, on Cardinal Lemoine in the latin quarter. It's set around a lovely garden courtyard and feels like a country place, yet is right in the middle of "the action". Recently redone rooms, and doubles were 500 fr in May. It's near the Place Contrescarpe, where somethings always going around the cafes, and which is at the top of fun Rue Mouffetard, with a marvelous street market during the day, and loads of little restaurants at night.
Phone is 011-33-1-43-26-79-23.

There is a fabulous website that offers a whole range of hotels, arranged by price and location AND shows you four pictures of each property. E-m if you'd like the address. We found Paris to be a real value in terms of hotels - what a pleasant surprise, to find really pleasant accommodations in the $85-$108 range. We stayed at two different hotels in June -- Grande Balcons and Ste. Christophe, and each was very, very pleasant. It was our first time, too, and I can guarantee, I think, that you will love it and have a wdonerful time. Do get yourself a really good street map -- and prepare to get lost once or twice, but that just leads to more fun exploring. And don't forget your basic French phrases -- Bon jour, Merci, Au revoir -- it goes a long way towards assuring a friendly Parisian response. Bon voyage!

Peg,
Agree with comments on Notre Dame. Stayed in same top floor room , ~1100 F. View and location. Can also recommend Hotel St Louis, on Ile St Louis. Refurbished old mansion. small but comfortable rooms, small elevator. Antiques. Great location. Also stayed at Bretonnerie in Marais district. Nice, but bit noisy, neighbourhood less appealing...but still nicely located.
