Paris hotel??? location, location, location
I am heading to Paris for 5 days in April and am looking for a hotel with the best location. I am willing to pay a fair amount (250 a night, but would prefer less) if it means I am within walking distance of a lot of attractions.

If you don't have a specific hotel recommendation, could you tell me what area you recommend I start looking at that would be in the middle of everything and close to a metro stop?

Thank you!

Suggest the 7th district; Eiffel Tower, Musee d'Orsay, Notre Dame, Jardin Luxembourg, Louvre, Napoleon's tomb, Rodin garden all within 20 minute walking distance. However, you can just about stay anywhere in the central city because Metro stations are numerous.

Have stayed at the Inter Continental Hotel just off the rue de Rivoli. It is a good location and within walking distance to the Champs. There are many designer stores in and around the area, if only for window shopping, small intimate restaurants and the Tuilleries are just across the st. If you would like to take any tours, CityRama is only about 3 blocks away all within walking distance. Good luck.

Paris attractions are so scattered about the city that paying extra to stay somewhere where you can walk to "the most attractions" is really not a good strategy. It's a small city, and the metro and bus systems are excellent. We always stay in the 7me because we like its quiet residential feel but also enjoy its many cafés and restaurants. From our base in the 7me we can get to the Musée d'Orsay, the Musée Rodin, les Invalides, la Tour Eiffel, and other less well-known attractions, but that could be said of a base in several Paris arrondissements - the St-Germain area, the Latin Quarter, the Montparnasse area, the Louvre area, for example. If you know specifically which attractions you want to be near, your quest makes sense. Otherwise, you have many, many options.

I recommend the Hotel de L'Arcade: www.hotel-arcade.com.
The location could not be better, it is VERY reasonable, and the rooms are spacious (for Paris). Also, they are the nicest people!

Any hotel on Rue jacob in the 6th. We've stayed at Millesime,d'Angleterre, du danube, and Verneuil all were excellent. cafes, shops, walking distance to most things you will want to see, convenient metro. Just a little more central to sights than the 7th

If you choose the 6th district and come across the Hotel d'Angleterre, from my experience, please make sure you do not get room #47. It cost us 248 euro per night (as a triple although not very large). This room needs maintenance which is not receiving currently.

Just returned Sunday night from 17 days in Paris and French countryside.

We spent the first week at Hotel Bonaparte, mentioned above. Bed wasn't great, but the location was terrific and the staff was very helpful. I paid 104 (reserved in June), my friend paid 125 because she reserved in August. No website or email, you will find their phone #s in the Fodors Paris hotel pages.

But I preferred the hotel we stayed at for the last 3 nights of our trip...Hotel de Notre Dame on Rue Maitre Albert (5th, bordering on 6th). This is one of those old, tiny, narrow streets...walk 50 yards north and you're standing on the quay looking over the Seine and Nortre Dame! As close in the other direction is Blvd St Germaine and Metro Maubert-Mutualite. Walk 3 minutes and you've crossed the bridge directly behind Notre Dame (l'Archveche, I believe) & Pont St Louis and now you're on the Ile St Louis...the best shopping we found in Paris...prices were better than in the Bonaparte area and department stores. (perhaps because it's winter?--we were pleasantly surprised). The hotel staff wasn't particularly helpful, but we had our bearings by then and knew what we wanted to see. We had room #11...small but clean, window view right down the old narrow street to the Seine, 150E per night plus 7E for breakfast. I think for about 10E more we could have had the superior room which looks a little bigger on the website.
http://www.hotel-paris-notredame.com/index.html
We loved this hotel, but would be happy at either one of these hotels for a future visit.
Don't stress yourself. Stay at the Hotel du louvre and plan to pay 225/night. You will be on the Rivoli, across the street from the Louvre (there is a private entrance to the Louvre) and the views of Opera Garnier are priceless. The conierge will take care of anything. Again, don't stress yourself, let the hotel do the work.

National Geographic Traveller rated the best 22 hotels under 100 dollars about 6-9 months ago. Muguet, Grand Ecoles, and Beaumarche (sp) are 3 that I recall off of the top of my head. I've stayed at Muguet (83 single, 92 double) near Hotel Invalides and Eiffel. I found it's quality excellent, very clean, very quiet, with metro's close by. The rooms ending in 1,2, or 3 have a view of Eiffel (probably at the 4th floor and above).

I think you can find a nice room well below $250. You may want to add some other qualities that require in a room, e.g. on site restaurant, large room, etc.

I also noticed that the Best Western's in Paris looked pretty nice. There is one that's not to far from Arc de Triumphe, but that is getting you a bit west of the city center.

There are a few Best Western locations in the 6th arr. If you need a standard room they go for less than 200 euro. Check their website at Best Western International.

I agree that the 6th dist. is the best-quaint, centrally located, lot of cafes, brasseries, and shops. Can't go wrong there. Also the 1st, 4th, and 5th districts are pretty central also. I didn't think the 17th arr. was that great-no charm really. The 15th arr. is charming and close to the Eiffel Tower but not much selection for shops and restaurants.
