Paris GTG, October 1 at Jim Haynes' Sunday soiree

WHere are the photos? The DIRT? The names and faces? I do want to hear all about it. My daughter and I are planning to be in Paris in February and are wondering if we should go to Jim Haynes' dinner party...

Melissa posted her pics of her trip and there is one taken at the party. It really was an enjoyable evening. There were so many interesting people to meet, locals and travelers.
We had our little GTG over by Jim's bookcase where we juggled his chicken dinner plates and our drinks. It was nice that some others joined us, a young pretty Alaskan Airline pilot, a steward for another airline, an interesting local man, a furniture designer (local young man).
I talked to a lovely German woman who has been living in France for 20 some years, I would have liked to have talked to her longer. There was Pierre who didn't need to talk, just standing there looking extremely handsome was enough! But he did speak to me a little...
Jim himself, sat on a stool most of the night holding court. I would recommend the evening for meeting all kinds of lovely people, even if you are not outgoing it is easy there because we were all there to meet and greet. It is not tedious like I had thought in the back of my mind before I went, it is comfortable and the athmosphere is one of joy. Some of the people go whenever they are in Paris and some of the locals go every few months to hone their English skills and meet new people from around the world.

SeaUrchin - Pierre the handsome, almost silent Frenchman - the stuff lurid novels are made of. Any chance he'll be there on Christmas Eve? I could send DH to fetch the boxed wine ............

I'm really curious as to the types of guests that will be there on Christmas Eve. Travelers are a given, but I am wondering about locals. Christmas Eve would not be my first choice for a soiree, but the only Sundays this trip, will be Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. I'm still trying to decide if we should go New Year's Eve too.
I'm sure that if we decide one week in advance, he will be full, but I don't want to
'book' both nights and then not go, wouldn't be fair to others.
I'll ask Jim when I write to him again. I guess you'd have to leave at Midnight when it ends, which could be a bummer on New Year's Eve.
Given time to think, it's amazing how many new problems you can come up with

Pierre stopped by for a drink, bringing a lovely box of an unknown red wine. DH really messed up the tab opening on the box, I guess it was the excitement of having a real French guy visiting us, so we just put a straw in the box and passed it around. I still had a partial bag of honey roasted nuts from the plane, which we shared. Lovely trip.'

I should share a follow up to the soiree. Do you remember Jim, the well dressed bald guy? He had taken the metro to the dinner with us (before we knew that's where he was headed) and when we went home, we saw him on the line towards Balard. I spoke to him briefly at the party.
Well, turns out he is a plastic surgeon in San Francisco! I told him he should meet with my dermatologist, who practices half time in Hawaii and half time in SF. I promised she would contact him, and he looked at me like I was totally kidding.
I got back this week, dropped her a note, and turns out she was already planning to go to SF this week. she dropped him a note, they swapped websites, and are going to meet. his office is within walking distance of hers, and they have a LOT in common. As I watched the emails go back and forth, I thought, 'Oooo! what if they hook up professionally as well as personally??' (I hope that means I get free services.)

Hi Melissa, I knew it would be fun meeting the Fodorites, just wasn't sure about the rest of the guests! I don't remember the bald man, I do remember Claude, he was so interesting.
Now that I look at our photo again, what is that man doing behind Barb! Hopefully looking at books.

Oh, that London ad is everywhere! Every metro stop....in posters on the streets, everywhere. That ad was up the entire time we were in Paris.
Well, I think the man at the bookshelf had his hands to himself! Or did he??? is that why you are all smiling so brightly?
Nina, forget the nuts! A fellow fodorite sent me a box with 3 cans of Spotted Dick this week. He was very pleased to know that his Dick made someone happy.

What has this world come to - 'they exchanged websites'. In my single days, it was cocktail napkins or match book covers.
Next time you find a single doctor in SF, call me immediately - I have a single daughter!
