There are a few good art stores near the Sorbonne. I can't remember the name of the street but it's on the river side of the Sorbonne. Look around between St.Jacques and St.Michel.
You can find this on-line too. Google for art supplies and these stores pop onto the list.

I'm not really an expert but there's a chain (though not all use the same name) that looks inviting from the outside at least:

Just a few days ago, NPR had a most wonderful piece on the Sennelier art shop, describing how the current owner's grandfather and father used to sell art supplies and create new colors and innovative paints for artists like Cezanne and Picasso. I'm not an artist, but it's on my list of must-see places on my next visit! Here's the link: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/s...toryId=5581725

Since you're staying in the 15th, you might like to have a look in a hardware (yes) store on Rue St Charles, just on the corner of the Place Charles-Michel. We were in there recently, and they had stretched canvases and artist's colours. It seemed a strange place to sell them, but that store had absolutely everything you might need to equip a house and then lots more (like the canvases).

I set off one morning in search of "A machine to draw the world"(La machine a`
dessiner le monde) which I had read about in Adam Gopnik's book 'From Paris To The Moon'.
I first called in at Paris American Art at 2&4 rue Bonaparte. The charming lady behind the counter sent me to Sennelier where this magic drawing aparatus was to be found!
A lovely old shop crammed full of stuff.

Just for the record, since you bring it up Robt, it's still Sennelier in Paris. I was there in January, anyway, and it's still possible to imagine you're waiting in line between Picasso and Cezanne.
