Paris catacombs closed indefinitely after being vandalized

I did a search and didn't see this, so my apologizes if this news has already been posted...

From the AP this afternoon:

http://tinyurl.com/lxhj6g

>>>Paris' underground bone collection, the catacombs, has been closed to the public indefinitely after being vandalized.

Ordinarily, the creepy collection of human remains — cleared from city cemeteries long ago — is orderly, with bones piled in stacks along underground tunnels. But a post-vandalism photo in Le Parisien newspaper showed bones and skulls scattered along the walking paths.<<<

I went the catacombs on my first trip to Paris in 2002. I thought they were very creepy and very interesting. Walking through the catacombs is one of the more vivid memories I have of that trip.

It's too bad some idiots had to be so stupid and destructive. Hopefully the catacombs will re-open soon.

I missed this piece of news, so thanks for posting, Apres_Londee. I've been to Paris many times, but have yet to visit the Catacombs. Hopefully it will be reopen at some point in the future.

I don't understand people sometimes. I haven't been yet and it's on my list. I can't travel for awhile so perhaps it will be open again when I next get back to Paris.

I was just searching to see if the catacombs had reopened and can't find anything to indicate that it has. I'll be in Paris in just three short weeks, and although I've been before, I've never gone to visit the catacombs. It was on my list for this trip until I found the same article that Apree_Londree references.

Does anyone know if/when the Catacombs will reopen? Does anyone have an update?

I hope they're not putting fences down there. It would ruin the charm.

It was still closed as of a few days ago. You can still sneak in through other entrances but unless you know someone who's been before or have some experience in daring underground adventures I'd seriously advise against it.

I've heard about a tour of the Paris sewers that includes a bit of the catacombs. Does anyone have any info on this tour?

This is too bad; why can't people be respectful? What did they get out of vandalizing the site? Idiots. We went a few years ago and it was a very interesting experience.

If anyone hears any more about this please post an update.

The Catacombs have been open again to the public since Dec of 2009. Be sure to get there early as they only allow 200 people in at one time!

Cheers,
