Depends on your stamina. The best way is flying into Paris and out of Prague. Then, either fly from Paris to Prague, or be prepared for an 18 hour train ride (do an overnight train for part of the trip, either Paris to Frankfurt or Frankfurt to Prague).

can you give me more details on the train ride? Also how many days should we spend in Prague? I lived in Paris, so it should be relatively easy to show my husband the city.

thanks

Go to www.ricksteves.com and check their Rail section. It has alink to the excellent Deutsche Bahn website. This will give you all of the scheduling details you need on any train trip in Europe (departure times, length of journey, stations, etc.)
Fodors

Dear Ms Palgon,

The reference library of a city near you may have the Thomas Cook European Timetable. That shows that your best trains are Paris Est 1718, Heinrich Heine Express with buffet car, Frankfurt 2320 to 2338, train with couchettes and sleepers, Prague Hlavni station (beware pickpockets) 0810. A 15 hour journey, of which nine are in bed.

With the e-mail copy of this message I am enclosing a note I keep on disc on couchettes and sleepers in Europe. I think a 3-berth women's sleeper will be the best buy.

For evenings in Paris you might look at http://www.pariscope.fr/, and in Prague at http://www.praguepost.cz/.

Please write if I can help further.

Ben Haines, London
Jacqueline, I'd look into a flight from Paris to Prague. Many European Airlines offer oneway tickets under $100.00. I don't think your train ticket would be much less...I've done the overnight on train bit and never seem to get a good nights rest.
Bon Voyage!

Thanks for the info. I have come up with some miles for free tickets so we are going to fly NY-Paris Paris-Prague, Prague-NY. We are booked Paris-Prague on Sabena - is this a good airline? I've never flown with them (yes, we have to change planes in Brussels)

So now that we are saving money on the flights, I am willing to splurge on hotels. Any ideas? (we'll be there the first week in June ).

How many days would you recommend for Prague? Our entire trip is about 10 days, but one day is a travel day.

thanks again!

Prague is an easy city to navigate (if not the cabs are REALLY cheap!). You really only need 2 days. See the Rad (the palace on the hill), the Charles bridge, and then the surrounding old town area near the bridge. There are plenty of stores, churches, restaurants, etc. But I feel the best part of the city is seeing the outside--the architecture. It's sky line is really quite pretty.

I, too am planning a trip to Prague and Paris. I haven't been able to find any flights from Prague to Paris for under $270 or so. This is for round-trip. One way is much more expensive.

Someone said many European airlines offer sub-$100 one-way tickets. Any examples for this route ?
I am using my frequent flier miles for the entire trip. When I checked the prices thought the lowest I found (Sabena & Swiss Air ) were about $240.

Do you have hotel reservations yet? I'm working on that now.
JW- What airline ar you flying on? I have had good results with Iceland air,
British airways, and United offering
these tickets as part of an arrangement they have with the local airlines.
You will be traveling on smaller planes, but, you should be able to find fares this low.
Have you gone to the website of AirFrance? I'd also look into other regional carriers.
Good Luck, I'll continue to think on this and see if I can offer any more specifics.
Gloria

I highly recommend the Hotel Grand Bohemia in the city centre of Prague. Very nice, modern rooms and bathrooms. Within walking distance of all the tourist sites. We spent three days in Prague and could easily have stayed another day or two. It is a lovely city to explore on foot. BTW the hotel was approx. 225 USD (for 2 adults - king size bed) in 1998.
