Paris: A quick trip report
Thanks to everyone here who helped me plan my trip to Paris. I spent six days solo in the city of light and loved every minute of it! I stayed in the Hotel de la Sorbonne. The hotel was lovely and very clean. I have heard about the small hotel rooms in Paris and read about them at this hotel on trip advisor. My room was large enough for me and well appointed. The bathroom was small but that's no surprise. The hotel provides a Mac in every room. Internet is free and the computer serves as a TV and DVD player as well.
I was in walking distance to just about everything. The Pantheon is around the corner as is Luxembourg Gardens. Notre Dame is about a 10 minute walk. I hit most of the major sites and found the public transportation easy to use. The weather was slightly horrible for most of the trip. The first four days were on and off rain. The sun came out in time each evening for a picnic in Luxembourg Gardens so no worries. I chose to use the bus system rather than the metro so I could get my bearings and see the city.
Neighborhood highlights for me were the Latin Quarter and Le Marais. Lots of great restaurants and shops. Also, l'As du Falafel totally lived up to the hype. I ate there twice, got it all over my self both times and can't wait to have it again. It's a great buy at 5 euros.
I had to rearrange some of my plans due to weather and ended up missing out on some sights(I didn't get to the L'Orangerie or Versailles) so I guess I will just have to go back...soon.
I am a big fan of Salvador Dali so I was very pleased with the Dali museum in Montmartre. It is very close to Sacre Couer and is a nice place to spend some time and go to lunch at one of the many nearby cafes. The museum is mostly sculptures and sketches with some paintings and photos.
Another highlight for me was the Rodin museum. I loved the way the sculptures are presented here and the gardens are lovely. I must say, I was a bit underwhelmed by the Eiffel Tower. I was especially bothered by the men selling trinkets. They were not very agressive as I entered, but as I was trying to exit I was completely surrounded. I found this very intimidating(I am female and only 5 feet 2 inches tall, all of these men were much larger than me and very much in my face). I wonder why the police don't intervene. There are tons of them(police)all over the place as well as the Army. There are warning signs around about these "salesmen" as well as PA announcements inside the tower, so I assume thier activities are illegal. The only other negative experience I had was around Notre Dame. Same sort of issue, agressive beggars. Other than that, I found Paris to be beautiful, charming and friendly.
I met many Parisiens who were very friendly and courteous. I wasn't surprised by this. Most people who "warned" me about the unfriendly French have never been to France. I actually found the people in Paris friendlier than locals in many other parts of Europe. I should point out that I do speak a little French and I believe this helps. Knowing the basics and being courteous always helps. Anyway, Paris has now become my new favorite city and I can't wait to go back. I am hoping to see London so perhaps I will add on a few days and take the eurostar. Until then....

Thank you for your report. I have visited Paris many times solo. It is my FAVORITE place. Yes, next time add on London.
The Eurostar is so easy, city center to city center.
My first solo trip was London and day trips. I was on top of the world feeling such a high. I was then completely hooked. Just sit down to the computer think where will I go next, not having to consult anyone except Fodorites if I choose.
Yes, most of the people who tell you stories of rude Paris have never been there. I have witnessed the Police giving chase to the illegal vendors on several occasions.
Happy travels.

thanks for your report - we are going to Paris in just under 2 weeks now, and my husband and older boy have the Dali museum on their list (not that I don't want to see it, but they particularly did. I had seen some 'mixed' reviews, so it was nice to hear feedback from an admitted Dali fan.
