Paris

Is Paris safe to walk around at night. Any areas to avoid. I hear so much about tourist theft.

We found walking at night to be safe, within reason. Well lit streets, not too late at night..theft can happen during the day, you can have your pockets picked on the Metro or have your bag stolen in a cafe, you just have to have some street smarts wherever you are at whatever time.
Maybe areas to watch out for would be Montmarte at night or the Marais? I never really thought about it, we just hopped in cabs when it got late and went wherever we felt like with no thought to safety..silly perhaps but I have always felt quite safe in Paris

I have always felt safe in Paris as well, although I did see someone get pickpocketed on the Metro. It happened so fast. They slipped their hand in the purse, took the wallet and left the train right before the doors closed.

It could happen anyplace if you are not paying attention.

The city of Paris itself is quite safe, even at night. The suburbs can be much less so.

While there is crime in Paris, there are also several million people. The per capita crime rate is low.

Hi I,

>I hear so much about tourist theft.<

Hardly any tourists are stolen.

Relax. Paris is much safer than most American cities.

Stay on well-lighted streets and don't accept offers to go into back alleys.

...and if anyone thrusts a baby at you, fold your hands behind your back. If it falls and breaks its crown - well, that's one less thief in the next generation.
