Paris: 3 girls/one week
3 females (age 50, 40 and 15)...Paris for one week for the first time. Please help with some suggestions about what district to get a hotel in. We would like a central location, quiet at night, 3 star, would love breakfast included and maybe a balcony or terrace...max. 200 euros/night. Also, if anyone could recommend a day trip out of the city to get another perspective of France..i.e St. Malo etc

I have not stayed at the Hotel Minerve, but others have and seem to like it for its Latin Quarter location and for its good rates. Balcony rooms I suppose you'll have to inquire about but I believe there are some rooms like that. Also you have to ask for a triple room.

I have stayed in Paris a number of times and here are some reasonable hotel ideas. I have stayed at all of them.
Hotel du Danube

Métro: Saint-Germain-des-Prés
This Hotel is in a perfect location, right on the line of the 6th and 7th Arrondisemonts. It’s only blocks from the Seine (across from the Louvre) and very close to all major Central Paris sites and shopping areas. The rooms are larger than normal. The bathrooms have space and some way to keep water from getting everywhere! The rooms are not modern but are decent sized and clean. I would suggest a courtyard room. They are much quieter than those on the street. The breakfast is not as great as other places, so I would suggest spending the money a few blocks away at Café Flore or Deux Maggots for breakfast. Very reasonably priced for its location and size.

This hotel is a few blocks away from Danube and is nice as well. It’s a bit pricier and I am not sure you are getting more room for your money. I thought it was a bit more up to date than Danube and had a better breakfast. But, I still think Danube is a better deal.

Right next to Millesime.Very nice staff and OK breakfast but the rooms are TINY. The bathrooms are stand up showers with no curtain or glass, so the bathroom gets soaked when you shower. The double room was tight with 2 people and 2 suitcases. If you can’t find a place, this is a good option but due to the room size only would not be my first choice.

Minerve Hotel
This hotel is in the Latin Quarter and less central than the above 3. It is nice and clean. They renovated about 5 years ago. Bathrooms are decent as in the breakfast. The neighborhood is more casual and student like than St. Germaine. It is much cheaper than the above hotels but I would rather pay for the convenient and more charming location of St. Germaine.

Have you thought about renting an apartment? It's not as daunting as it sounds, and it's usually cheaper, and you'd probably have better luck locating a rooftop terrace. The only challenge would be finding one that sleeps 3 that has 3 separate beds. But check out the Slow Travel website for recommendations.
As for arrondisements, anything under the number 8 will do you just fine.
It isn't easy to find "quiet" in Paris. The streets and building are close together and there is a lot of traffic at all hours. Wherever you book, specifically ask for "quiet," but if you also ask for a "balcony" you are sort of at cross purposes with yourself. Facing a big street with a view will bring noise -- unless a terrace overlooking an interior courtyard is OK with you. (They can be charming.) In any event, bring your earplugs!

We stayed at the Minerve two years ago. Although the room was clean and we did have a balcony, I agree with mkg12 that the location is not as central as the other locations suggested. I know I was a bit disappointed in the location and later this month have opted for a St. Germaine and Marais location (splitting the stay between two different areas).
We have also stayed in the Rue Cler area and enjoyed the pedestrian-only street and street market. Not a happening place at night. My father and Matthew, my 15 year old nephew, stayed on Rue Cler last year. Matthew felt quite comfortable and safe exploring the area a bit on his own. There was also a little store next door to buy a nibble or a soft drink.
Day trip ideas: Versailles or the great cathedral at Chartres

I did stay at the Hotel du Danube though. Do not reserve one of the 'apartments'. If you do and you are booked into the one my relative and I had you may me disappointed. It is the rose colored one that is shown on their website. But it was not pretty. The second room was dark and unattractively small and the bathroom was outdated, no ventilation in it, and not even a soap dish anywhere. Worse was the very unwelcoming reception. I don't expect hotel staff to be my best friends, but please can they at least acknowledge guests when they arrive to check in?!

My two sisters and I stayed at the Hotel Des Grandes Ecoles in the Latin Quarter seven years ago, and my sister and husband just stayed there in January.
The hotel's buildings are in a pretty courtyard with chairs and tables. It is quiet, and they serve breakfast, which is additional.
