Palladio's La Rotunda (Villa Capra), near Vicenza

Fellow travelers:

Has anyone visited Palladio's famous Villa- La Rotunda? We would like to stop there when we leave Venice next month. Does anyone know how far Vicenza is from Venice & how easy it is to find the villa? I haven't had any luck in my internet searches.

Vicenza is 60 minutes by train west of Venice: very frequent service. From the train station, there is a bus which goes up the hill to a stop near the Villa. You can also walk there is about 30 minutes: it's not too steep. There is also the Villa Valmarana, near Villa Rotonda.

Thanks Gac. We'll actually be renting a car after we leave Venice & were hoping to catch La Rotunda before we head toward Florence. Do you know if there is parking close by?

Don't know for a fact, though I suspect yes.

For something so famous, I was surprised at how poorly marked it is in Vicenza. Fortunately, with stopping to ask directions at least twice, I found friendly and helpful people.

And there is really no parking area - - just on the street outside the entrance. Again, that turned out not to be so difficult, though I think I ended up with a walk of about 500-1000 yards.

It's hard to explain why it seems so cool to go there. It's like staring in the face of all modern architecture history, in the flesh.

Best wishes,

Rex
Rex,

Thanks. I'm sure with a little help from the locals we'll find it.
