I just got back from Sicily yesterday! I am not sure if the hotel I stayed at was in that neighborhood, it's located on Via Mariano Stabile. It was Hotel Gardenia, http://www.gardeniahotel.com/
Great location, but the walls were really thin. I would stay there again though, 78 Euros per night. No breakfast.
I wish I had 2 weeks! I only had 10 nights. You could easily do 2 weeks. I had 3 nights in Palermo, I really didn't feel like I had enough. I had one night in Ortygia, I could have easily done 2-3.

We did 3 nights Palermo, 3 nights Sciacca at Verdetecnica (self-catering accomodations), 1 night Ortygia at Hotel Gutkowski, 3 nights Taormina at Pensione Svizzera. Thanks for all your answers to my posts GAC. There aren't too many people on this board with knowledge of Sicily. When I get myself together I will post a report. All in all, it was a wonderful trip!

AP etal..
I too am a fan of Palermo! And Sciacca! What an amazing stroll along the waterfront-and the gelato...oh my my.
As for Ortygia, rosiev if you get a chance to go there, check out the Hotel Gran Bretagna--there are rooms that still have the original frescoes in them!
And don't miss the cloisters at Monreale or the town of Erice-very sweet. If Roman/Greek era stuff is your dish, Agrigento is great and has an outrageous museum with tons of red and black figure pottery! However, one of my favorite spots was also Eraclea Minoa-a small town with a sweet theater and a charming small museum on the site. It gives you a better idea of what the real people (as opposed to great nobility) had and used. Oh, and did I mention Enna and Cefalu??? Oh, and that the place all those "spaghetti westerns" were filmed is the only desert in Italy--in Sicily. Have an outstanding time-you'll love it!

The original "Spaghetti Western" of Sergio Leone with Clint Eastwood from 1965 was actually filmed in the Village of San Salvatore on the Sinis Peninsula west of Oristano, on the beautiful island of Sardinia.
