Take the compass! I took one last summer for a 16 day trip to Italy- I didn't need it till the last 5 days in Rome. For some reason, my usually flawless sense of direction failed me there, and it just about drove me nuts till I remembered the compass. Checking it a few times restored my sense of direction, and my sanity!

We travel with teens and always do carryon. It's really not that hard with a 21" rollaboard and a smaller carryon bag(but your purse must fit inside!) For packing the souveniers I have one of these baggalini bags: http://www.baggallini.com/product1.a...t=%27BIM217%27.

It folds up small and flat for the trip there, than we do what the other poster said and put dirty laundry in it and check it on the way home. Checking luggage on the way back is not as critical as checking on the way there.

My 16 yo DD does travel with a flat iron - the converter is actually pretty big and heavy but she does manage it in her carryons.

I would definitely have a scarf, hat and gloves. We were in London in March and it was quite cold - hubby bought a scarf while there because it was so cold and he hadn't brought one.

My daughter really liked shopping in Camden Market, and Covent Gardens. She also loved TopShop which hasn't made it's way to America yet(although set to open in NYC in the spring).

If you're not in the habit of wearing long underwear in St Louis in the winter, then you won't need it in London in March. Even if it takes up almost no room in your suitcase. If you don't already have silk underwear then there is NO need to go and buy some. Winter coats, yes. A scarf, probably (I always have a giant one, like a pashmina or similar along). Gloves, I wouldn't but you might want them.

When I'm in London I get warm walking around, and when I go inside for any period of time can get overwhelmingly hot with layers consisting of t-shirt, cardigan and winter coat.

No one is ever going to convince me that someone who is used to a real winter will need long underwear in London in March.

taggie - you had some great points!! we are used to the cold - and walking and going inside might not mix well with long underwear.
