Hotel des Grandes Ecoles
For years I tried to book this hotel and never could. Now I,just received a confirmation and wonder why I haven't seen it recommended here for years. Has anyone stayed there lately?

Which city is it in?
If it's the one in Paris, all the guide books seem to have their websites wrong. I just saw something from the NY Times and also checked Frommers.
They all use a hotel booking site, which doesn't seem to link to this hotel. However, Frommers has the hotel's phone #.
Look it up and give them a call.

A few years ago now - but it is an excellent slightly eccentric place. Only problem is its location - its a bit of a trek to the main sites in Paris - but unless you find it difficult to walk, dont let that put you off.

It is in Paris on Cardinal Lemieux and used to get rave reviews from Fodorites. It was very popular and it was difficult to get a room there. Now I have one but after doing a search here it has not been mentioned since 2009 and the trip advisor reviews are not so great.

Stayed there in November last year and it's a fantastic little place. I wouldn't say it's too far from the sights - 10 mins to Notre Dame for example, similar to Jardin de Luxembourgs. Just over €100 for a double.

It's not far from the sights at all. Right near Place de la Contrascarpe, a busy square, for a late night wine or coffee. Close to Notre Dame and you have the metro to get to places farther away. I stayed there once (but quite a while ago) and thought it was a great location. Plus you have that lovely garden where you can picnic - plenty of take away shops on rue Mouffetard.

We stayed at this hotel in May and have stayed there several times in the past. I requested a specific room in January overlooking the garden for four nights in late May. We did not get that room and were put in the building without an elevator on the third floor. The room was large and had space for four (just two of us) and, of course, it was more expensive than the room/area that we requested. There was no opportunity to have another room as the place stays full. Will not stay there again and I will add my review to Trip Advisor.

Forgot to add this: not all rooms will overlook the nice garden-our room had two windows and one overlooked the trash cans by the entry gate and the other overlooked Cardinal Lemione which has some noise with vespas cruising through.
