Thanks everyone. We wanted to do the train experience. We have been going to Italy for many years and wanted to try the overnight experience but many of the reviews and your suggestions make us question that choice. We may just fly to Catania from Rome. We will be renting a car in Sicily and driving back to Calabria when we leave Sicily and will experience the ferry from Messina then. Thanks again. Happy Holidays!

Doppio is a double (2-bed) sleeper, and intero means 'whole' or 'entire', so that's what you want.
I've been on at them for years to change the 'double seat compartment' mis-translation, so that's good if they've simplified it, but not so good if it's now in Italian!
I find Google Chrome's built-in automatic translationa facility fab for understanding foreign websites. Youll never be stumped by a site in a foreign language again!

Well I have taken many overnight trains in Italy, including Sicily to north Italy ones and they are perfectly fine - with a private compartment you will be safe and can sleep soundly - though there is inherent noise coming from train tracks at times and stops in stations - but a private double is very nice - no loud snorers to put up with unless your partner and no one getting up and going out in middle of night (unless one of you) like you have in multi-person compartments.

Hi!
Can anyone help me? I want to take an overnight train from Venice to Rome in March (I know its way to soon to book) but what I would like to know is if I can book a private room/compartment for 2 people. I dont see an option on trenitalia.com
I did this a couple years ago but had 4 people so we were able to book a complete 4 bed compartment. I just want to know if 2 private bunks is an option or if I will have to share w 2 strangers which I prefer not to! Thanks!!!
Hopefully Man_in_seat_61 will reply since he seems so knowledgeable on this!

No real night trains for Venice/Rome as the travel time is only 3 1/2 hours during the day. While there is a train designated as a night train, it would be pointless to book it as you couldn't possibly get a night's sleep. It doesn't depart Venice until after midnight and arrives Rome at 6:30 am. The only options on that train appear to be 2nd class seats or 4 person couchette.

depends on whether that night train originates in Venice or not - if it does it is not unusual to allow people on the night train way before departure and also at the other end maybe not to rouse folks at 6:30 am - well that is my experience - but in any regards you certainly can board that train before midnight - well before I suspect so not so bad.
