NO! Was it on his show?? I just caught in on a Spanish language site. Maybe 7 Canibales??
i love Phil especially when he shows his parents. Those Jewish comedians and their parents. Woody, Phil, Howard, Seinfeld.

And then there is the big bash film about my own done by my dear sister.

Who has now told me that they did not like the VM in Madrid. Hard to keep up!!

Phil just cracks me up. I loved the segment when he called home to chat with his parents.

I can't imagine who told you they didn't like the Rosewood Villamagna in Madrid. It's my favorite hotel, especially at Christmas when they build the wooden Swiss Alpine chalet (their chalet alpino) and serve raclette, fondue and apple strudel, have cozy blankets and next to it they build a mini skating rink for the kids and have a churros y chocolate stand. They have an exceptional Christmas to New Year's family program and beautiful Christmas decorations.
I love this hotel! And the staff is super friendly. Although we don't stay there, we stay nearby, justa stroll across the Paseo de la Castellana and go for drinks or an aperitivo or brunch. Their Christmas Day brunch, albeit very expensive, is fabulous.

I believe it was his Madrid episode where he also went to Sala de Despiece, Chocolatería San Ginés (which will be a total madhouse at Christmas time), StreetXo by David Muñoz (now upstairs in the El Corte Inglés Serrano), MO de Movimiento, Sacha, Barrera and La Casa del Abuelo for gambas al ajillo. We've watched almost all of his episodes in his various series. I love Phil, his daughter, his wife and his dad.

Barrera indeed has no printed menu (so no prices, so you must inquire--plan on about 60+/person without going crazy on the wine--we like the albariño from Pazo de Rubianes), no website, no X, no Instagram, and reservations by phone only. It's one of those Madrid classics that haven't been too heavily discovered in the international press and travel guides (but it is in Fodor's), like Asturianos and El Pedrusco de Aldeacorvo.

The family also runs a traditional restaurant in the Sierra in Santa Maria de la Alameda, in our neck of the woods, manned by the brother Pablo. Super traditional, super good. It serves winter comfort food like patatas revolconas, pisto, riñones al jerez, cabrito asado. For summer it has an inviting outdoor terrace.

Maribel how can I convey my thanks for this and for so much through the past decades?

You know we have all but given up o dining out in NYC during the past year or so, with exception of some out-of-the-way Asian places in Queens....even the big ticket, "trendy" NYC places just do not excite me anymore, and prices are just insane. Since we have good produce most of the year I prefer to just cook at home..I recommend again Jose Andres" new Middle Eastern cookbook, Zaytina. I only hope the work on my teeth gets almost finished by our time in Madrid!! The entire summer has been a predicament with temporary teeth falling out and needing to be glued back in..

Honestly, my sister had been urging me towards the Villa Magna for years, so imagine my shock when she told me the other day that, no, they did not like it and were thinking of trying "Ricky's (me) place" for their next trip to the capital! So we know that one of us is of the bleak downhill road to memory loss........despite other indicators I am sure this is not me!!!!! Oh, dearest Cindy, I love you to the end, but honestly, get your memories straight! And here we are, together at our second lunch duo of EL CAMPERO and ANTONIO!!

The three musketeers--Little Sister Cindy, Ekscrunchy, and Andre, after our second lunch of the day, at BAR ANTONIO near Zahara, 2019..the trip where I stayed in Cadiz and met them there, when they were staying near Vejer. That was my introduction to the glories of La Janda (??) where I will return again in March, 2025??? Ojala!!

I remember that! Your first visit to La Janda when they were staying at CS and your crazy taxi ride from Cádiz!

Yes, that crazy taxista who kept pulling off the road so we could listen to his favorite Michael Jackson songs!

Oh, that was FUN!'
And I had my first taste of ortiguillas, in Cadiz......oh the corner room at that parador that you guided me to book!!

Since we own the only apt in NYC where Netflix is impossible to get, (we do pay for it) can I see PHIL on YouTube?

No, I don't think so--just some trailers. I just checked. We saw many episodes on Netflix. We have it here.

For another trip, not this upcoming one, as your dance card is quite full, I can highly recommend Lucía Grávalo's new bistro DESBORRE (meaning "bud burst" in the vineyards), on Calle de la Unión, within steps of the Teatro Real. I went there solo for lunch and tried her Petit Desborre menu of 5 passes (way too much deliciousness) for 48 euros. This is very inventive Riojan cuisine, recipes from her grandmother, her "yaya", but with Lucía's very, very original twist. Very sustainable cuisine, from bio producers, no waste, very selective wine list from small producers, some I had never heard of, except for our friends´s wine, El Molino de Puelles from Abalos. Lucía is from Calahorra, Rioja.

This is her 3rd attempt here in the city and as 7 Caníbales reported, 3rd time is charm. It´s a small place, seating 18 in the dining room and an adjacent private dining space, with exposed brick, reclaimed wood, vintage embroidered linens, reclaimed marble tabes with wrought iron legs, everything, including the silverware, reclaimed from French antique shops and original stone plates, very organic, great breads from Panática served with AOVE picual from Sierra de Cazorla---charmingly, but sophisticatedly rustic. She trained with both Berasategui and Dani García, and it shows and also spent time at the Navarran La Manduca de Azagra. Her new bistro has received rave reviews, interestingly, in the same space as the former Riojan restaurant run by ladies, Algarabía.

I'm glad you were able to see Season 5, Episode 5 of Phil's visit to Madrid. You also might like Season 1, Episode 4 of Phil in Lisbon. Several places you know.

I just realized that we'll miss you at La Castela; we've reserved for dinner on Monday, Nov. 18, when you'll be in Cuenca. But I hope you thoroughly enjoy your dinner there!

Ships in the night, again!!!!

So far it's good that I have time before the trip, as a good portion of my teeth are out in preparation for new caps; right now my menu is soup and soup and soup!!!

NO TURRON NI CARAMELOS NI CHULETONES! Imagine if a ShakeShake (fairly crappy) burger could take out a tooth, what could a good chuteta do right now!!!

Partner has just developed some kind of vascular condition in calf and may not even be able to go to Valencia with me next month depending on what tests takes place this week and what they indicate!!! Tantas joyosoas para empezar en los anos "Golden!" Ay, que dar gracias para la lo mucho que tenemos--todos nosotros.

¡Caramba Scrunchita! Pero tienes razón, tenemos que apreciar lo que tenemos. I hope that your partner's situation results in something rather minor so that he can accompany you and enjoy a good paella.
Ii holding A good thought for you both.

Not to Hiijack you're thread but what was the name of the automobile rental company you ended up using last time?

Besitos a todas mi amiguitas!

Sixt, Amsdon! Already booked for the upcoming November (Ojala!)! trip)

Funny that when I typed in 'Ojala", the word "Kamala" came in!!). Ojala!!!
My 90-year-old neighbors are, as I write this, on the return bus from Pennsylvania to NYC with their canes and wheelchairs by their sides....second time in two weekends that they have made this trek.

Hope, hope that J can go along to Valencia...and to parts further afar. But this age issue has really come to slap me in the head..mainly him but for me as well..we are to make to with what we can do now so there are no regrets looking back. I had a bad, rare cancer when I was 19 and always said I would be so happy that I had been able to go so far at that young age....just when we thought the bells would toll, here I am decades later!!

My first dinner in Europe was in Madrid, (en route to my summer school in Valencia) where the owners Botin guested these two-know-nothing teenagers..I am going to do my best to ferret out that photo of all of us..the best friend who I did my traveling with in those years (imagine, we hitchhiked our way though Turkey to the Syrian boarder ("HI MOM, we are GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!") the next year or two when I was cleared) has long ago passed on, as has I imagine the Botin owner(s)......I have to get out that scappbook!

Imagine, one of those trips ended up at the 1972 Munich Olympics when I was sneaking into the Olympic Village to stay there with a friend when that horror unfolded.

Would miss none of any of this for ONE MINUTE!!!!!!!!!

Sorry to blab so long....will now have to play comforter for the Yankee fan sitting next to me..tv has gone off again so it is on radio!!!

Scrunchita!! WOW!! GUAU!!!
To me it sounds like you are the personification of the verb "gozar." Not only do we need the photos perhaps we need a special Highlights of Ekscrunchy trip report as a consolidation of your wild moments on travel !
I can't believe you hitchhiked and that you were in Munich for the Olympics ( As a stow away no less)

Maribel, Sounds like a fabulous evening . I can't wait to hear your take on Rocio Molina. Where is Kimhe? I wanter if he is going? He was hardcore into Rocio.

By the way I'm curious who It's going to play guitar for Rocio Molina The relationship with her guitarist is obviously a special one and she has 2 or 3 favorites 1 of which is Yerai Cortez

To everyone speaking of flamenco, yesterday I learned that another one of my favorites is between theater performances & dancing at Los Leones in Madrid.
( At least this week) His name is Yoel Vargas & at 21 he won the " Desplante" prize in dance in the very Cante de las Minas. He is a superstrong dancer not just flamenco but has incredible classical training and so he is very much in demand With Manuel Liñan's company and others for spanish classical / escuela bolera style. competition https://allflamenco.net/en/interview...r-yoel-vargas/
