Overnight help for Zurich

Malaysian Airways have rationalised their flights from KL and our flight from KL to Vienna is now KL to Zurich!!!
We need CHEAP overnight accommodation in Zurich close enough to the main train station to allow us to catch the 7.33am train to Salzburg. Suggestions appreciated.

I have good and bad news for you:

Bad: We are not aware of the word "cheap" in Switzerland. Zurich is among the most expensive cities in the world.

Good: Unlike in other countries, one or two star hotels are bearable in Switzerland.

The hotels adjacent the station are usually rather expensive, mainly due to the fact that the main shopping street (Bahnhofstrasse) is in their vicinity. Expect to pay up to 100 USD/night for a double room at a two star hotel. Three stars is up to 150 USD/night.

I found a youth hostel not too far from the station for you. You may want to try that: http://www.youthhostel.ch/frames/vor...&sprache=e

Good luck!

I paid 150 Swiss Francs for a single room at the Hotel Walhalla. Very close to the main station (5 minute walk). This is a nice hotel but no air conditioning, which means you may need to keep your windows open at night. It's on a busy street so there's plenty of noise.

What time does your flight arrive? Have you considered getting right onto a train to Vienna from Zurich airport? According to SBB.ch (website for Swiss Railways) there are overnight trains to Vienna departing from the airport virtually every hour between 6 am and 11 pm. If you are arriving within those hours, you should be able to get a train. (Enter "Zurich airport" as your starting point to see trains which leave directly from the airport. You may have to change at the main train station in Zurich.) The last train leaves at about midnight, and then no trains until about 6 am.
If a train direct to Vienna from the airport will not work, there is a Movenpick hotel a the Zic Zac Rock Hotel a few minutes from the airport which may be cheaper alternatives to staying in Zurich. I believe both hotels offer a shuttle to the airport. You can then take a train from the airport to the main train station (or to Vienna via other stops, check the SBB website.)
You may also have recourse against Malaysia Airlines, esp if you have already purchased a ticket for Vienna. Malaysia may be able to put you on a connecting flight to Vienna, or route you from KL to Vienna through a stop in the Middle East. Call the airline or a travel agent.

Thanks for that. I have heard of the Zic Zac and will check that out. Will try MAS also. Have also thought about rail to re-enter our itinerary and that will put us into the Oktoberfest in Munich and that appeals if only to see what goes!!!
