If you overstay what happens if Things Go Wrong?

You need urgent medical attention - does your insurance cover you? You come to the attention of the authorities - will they stick you in jail rather than give you a warning / on the spot fine. You are in a road accident - is your insurance valid, if not are you guilty of driving without valid insurance?

Oh and by the way november_moon, my late husband used to say "be careful what you wish for…."

I can tell you that Schengen external border (when you enter or leave Schengen) is getting quite strictly controlled. I, an EU national, who used to just get waived through, in the last year or so get asked questions (how long are you or have you been staying? Purpose? etc) and then passport scanned against Schengen database. I can imagine non-EU nationals being more closely questioned.

jm, well done and I hope you get back to Italy. We are hoping to move there permanently...

Personally, though, no I never speed - since I don't drive !
