Our trip itinerary, your thoughts

Itinerary for my husband and me. Land in Frankfurt on April 29, pick up a rental car, drive to Bacharach and stay in Hotel Kranenturm for 3 nights, we'll explore the castles and wineries. On the 4th day we will drive to Rothenburg for 1 night staying at Gasthof Goldener Greifen. The next morning we will drive to Fussen and stay at Hotel-Zum Hechten for 3 nights visiting the castles, Zugspitz and little surrounding towns.

Now, here comes the tricky part, we were going to spend 2 nights in Salzburg and 2 nights in St. Gilgen but the more I think about it seems like we should spend the 4 nights in St. Gilgen and do day trips. It seems to me like it would be easier than checking in and out of the hotels. I found Gasthof Fürberg [[email protected]] seems nice on the lake but I sure can't find any reviews, but I read good things on Hotel Billroth, the only thing is they are not situated on the lake, to all of you that have visited that area which hotel should we pick? It's very difficult to decide, we want a patio with really pretty surroundings for that part of our stay.

After our stay in St. Gilgen we will drive to Munich, drop off the car, stay at The Acanthus for 2 nights and fly back to the US on May 12.

Hi Suze1,
Although we haven't stayed in St. Gilgen, I think the idea of staying in one place 4 nights instead of 2 and 2 is a good one. Last month we drove from Berchtesgaden to Hallstatt in about 1 1/2 hours. I'd say about 40 min. from St. Gilgen to Salzburg and a little less to Hallstatt. Also, we stayed at Hotel Zum Hechten 2 times and really like the place. If you haven't already, ask for a room with a balcony, they overlook the castle in Fussen. It looks nice lit up at night.

ps. Not having stayed in St. Gilgen I can't advise on picking a hotel, but after just visiting the area I don't think you'll have a problem with pretty surroundings!

Hello Suze, Have we not done this before--it seems to ring bells.
Yes, do stay in St. Gilgen--you will love it. I can suggest the Gasthof Zur Post--a nice 3 star in the heart of town. Or, if you want something a bit better try the Billroth. Or, if you want a B&B family feel and good value try the Garni Schernthaner. There, you have 3 good options. Your trip sounds wonderful--good choices of locations and hotels.

I'm just going to make the reservation at Gasthof Fürberg, it's right over the lake, it has to be nice. We really wanted a patio over the lake and this hotel offers this. Thanks for your help.
