VT a friend of mine and her DH just did Cornwall to the far south of Italy by train - Truro - London - Lille - Basel - Venice and Lecce. Not sure what their return routing was, but they seem really to have enjoyed it. The worst bit is definitely Cornwall to London!

I'm looking to rent with Sixt for a multi-country round-trip car rental, starting and ending in Sarajevo. I'm seeing a limit of 2500km total and 100km/day – we will definitely have a few days where we exceed 100 km, and might come close to 2500km. You said you dropped off the car with no problems – did they check mileage? Did your rental agreement also have a mileage limit? Thank you in advance for the response!

Thank you - that's really good to know. I found that Enterprise offers unlimited mileage – more expensive of course, but worth it given I will almost certainly exceed the mileage limits.

Great report. I've visited this region several times and always enjoyed it. In my opinion, Montenegro is every bit as interesting, scenic and relaxing as a base as Croatia is. We've enjoyed both immensely - as well as many of the other Balkan countries. And going inland, away from the beaches (as lovely as they may be) is a good way to learn more about the countries. Like you described, prior to my initial visit many years ago, I failed to understand the complexities of the cultures, conflicts and history. I'm certainly no expert but visiting did spark my interest in learning as much as I could.

Thanks for the detailed TR. I have to say I really liked Split and quite liked Zagreb.
BTW, the area you drove through on the way to Mostar is officially Republika Srpska, calling it the Republic of Serbia is confusing, given that Serbia is right next door.
Public buses run from Dubrovnik along the coast in Montenegro. I found them quite comfortable.
