Hi trishready,

In July, I'd go to Copenhagen - it has pretty much everything you're lookung for. Stockholm and Bergen (not really a city though) are supposed to be nice too, never been though.

Hope this helps,
Andre

It seems that the consensus for London is very low on everybody's choice. It has all of the qualities wanted but something seems missing. Maybe it's just the heart!

Ease of transport- Berlin, London
History- Istanbul, Rome (not much since the fall of the Empire)
Beauty- Istanbul- the San Francisco of Europe. St. Petersburg
Relaxing- not a quality I seek in a city.
Warm Local People- Istanbul, Copenhagen
Shopping- don't know, it's certainly fun and an adventure in Istanbul!

I read about halfway through the replies and was wondering why no one mentioned Strasbourg, then saw your post about your daughter.

Strasbourg is one of the prettiest large cities in France. There are many tree-lined canals/rivers running through it; a very green, very beautiful city.

An above ground electric tram can transport you around the city quickly, and the old center is easy to walk.

To relax, try taking a boat ride on the Ill river, or rent a bicycle and check out the surrounding countryside. For a reasonably large city, Strasbourg seems to have little traffic, pollution or noise problems.

Everyone I encountered was exceptionally friendly and helpful.

The only shopping I did was for food in restaurants, and here again Strasbourg and the Alsace region excel.

I'm not familiar with the history of Strasbourg - except that the whole region has been traded back and forth between France and Germany and thus has an interesting background; plus, history is being made right now in Strasbourg since it is one of the two seats of the European Union.

Strasbourg is about 4 hours by train from Paris. Basel is one hour, Zurich about 2.5 hours from Strasbourg. My only caution would be that it may be difficult to find rooms while the EU is in session at Strasbourg - which is every other week.

Trish: Copenhagen and Stockholm would be my two choices, although Paris is always lurking in the back my mind.
Your daughter might be interested in Rome for its ancient history, although it can be uncomfortably hot in summer. Strasbourg I will know more about in a few weeks...will be there a few days as part of a barge trip. The research shows that the above post by derkflint is right on the button..hope so! Enjoy!

I would vote for London. But since I have not seen all of Europe, I reserve the right to change my mind later!

My vote would go for Paris, though Venice, Barcelona, and Seville are way up there too.
