Opera in Rome

Dear Travelers,
My wife and I are novices at opera but would love to attend the opera while in Rome in March. I have gotten to the TEATRO DELL'OPERA DI ROMA website but have been unable to figure out how to make ticket reservations. I attempted to purchase through a European ticket service that I found online but never got a response.
Could someone please tell me hoe to buy tickets for the opera at Teatro Dell'Opera di Roma?
Thank you very much.
Geoff R

Have you tried http://www.leonidaniele.it?

Or, http://www.selectitaly.com?

If you are using scalareale, they will help you with tickets. Some hotels will, as well.

I am going to Rome and the only opera I have found performing while I will be there is Les Contes D'Hoffmann. I think it is in French? I sound prejudiced, but I would prefer to hear an opera sung in Italian--since I'm in Italy. Should I pass on this one, or is this still worth seeing since I'm not a big opera fan?
Also, when in Rome before, I saw people promoting these "Opera Aria Productions", which are the famous arias from many operas sung for mostly tourists, I believe. Are these worth going to instead? Can these promoters be trusted?

Thanks for the input.
Aria a a a a.

Ron

Hi Ron. I'm an opera lover, but when I took someone who is fairly neutral on opera to Hoffmann, it became his favorite. It begins & ends in a bar and is quite melodic and I wouldn't miss it just because it is sung in French. But then again, I like opera. Just be sure if you decide to go that you get a synopsis in English (available on the internet) as this one has a wacky story line.

Geoff--What are your dates in Rome? I have also researched for March, and found a small theater with some performances. E-mail me direct for more info.

I have checked many websites for dates in early June and have found none. Does any one know if this is a normal off time for Opera in Rome?

Steve, you have been one of my best sources of info for my trip to Italy this May. Thank you again! Have you been to one of these 'I MUSICI VENEZIANI' events? It sounds interesting to me.

I did find the leonidaniele site and successfully bought a pair of tickets for Les Contes D'Hoffmann and, from the comments here, look forward very much to seeing it. I also found an English synopsis at the Met site.
Thank you all.
Geoff R.

Tammy - I've never been to one of their evenings, - but I'm sure they'd be very good. They dress up in medieval costume.
I've never been to a bad concert in Italy. I'm sure you wouldn't be disappointed ...

Steve

Since this thread is discussing musical performances in Rome, I'm going to ask this question. Maybe you will know, Steve.

Years ago my husband and I were in Rome and decided to try a spot for dinner that was suggested in a guidebook I had at the time, (which has since been discarded or lost, which explains why I'm now having to ask for help). I am totally unable to tell you where in Rome this place was. We practically stumbled upon it. We thought we were just going to have a nice dinner, but the layout in this restaurant was unique. There was a lower floor with a stage at the end, and an upper tier like a balcony that surrounded the main floor. As dinner got started, much to our surprise, so did a stage show. This show consisted of the actor/singers in provincial costume representing the various regions of Italy as well as the music. It was almost a vaudevillian type show at times with humor and some slapstick, but the main thing was the singing which was fabulous. There was a tenor who could sing Neopolitan songs with the best if them! It was an amazing evening.

I feel like a fool for not having kept up with the information on this, but it WAS almost 20 years ago. Does any of this ring familiar to anyone out there??
We are going again next week, and I would love to take our children to this place, if it still exists. Any help or suggestions for similar venues would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Hello Jan,

I really wish I could help on this one but I never ate anywhere where there was a stage show as such.

There was a place I loved in the 80's when I was there called LA FIERAMOSCA in Trastevere (Piazza de' Mercanti), which had strolling musicians who went from table to table. It always had a great atmosphere! I haven't been for 10 years+, so I can't reccommend it from recent experience. I believe it's now called LA TAVERNA DEI MERCANTI.

In the same square was DA MEO PATACCA which also had musicians most evenings.
Does that sound familiar?

I suggest you re-post this question with a Rome Restaurants heading, Jan, - I'm sure someone might be able to help you. Good luck!

Steve

Thanks, Steve. I did consider reposting but never got around to it. Will do.

This was '84 when we were there, and I'm pretty sure it had to have been the Trastavere area, though I couldn't swear to it. I'll definitely take the 2 places you mentioned with me to look into. If we can't find this show, just anything like that would be great. Thanks for your reply and your help, Steve!

Jeanette, I've got 2 posts up right now about it. Look for what I hope will become a definitive answer soon. The first post asks about whether anyone's ever heard of this place. Someone wrote in that they think it might be a place called Fantasie di Trastevere. I then posted another thread with that name in the title. Hopefully we'll get some answers!
