One week in Norway

My husband and I will be in Finland for two days in August, and would like to spend a week to 10 days in Norway. Never been before. Maybe combine self driving with a little hiking. Understand ferry, cruise rail are possibilities. What itinerary would you recommend ? Thanks.

Here's what we did: two nights in Oslo then the scenic train to Bergen for a couple of nights. From Bergen we took the bus/ ferry combo to the Hardangerfjord. Overnight in Ulvik at Brakanes. From Ulvik took the bus to Voss and then the train to Flam and the ferry along the Naeroyfjord to Gudvangen. (That's the route of Norway in a Nutshell. ) Spent the night at the Stalheim hotel and then the next morning made our way by bus and ferry across the Sognefjord to Balestrand. Spent two nights at Kviknes, would have liked one more. Took a ferry back to Bergen.

Public transport is great in Norway. Trains, buses and ferries are all coordinated. We were on the way to meetings in Stockolm so we stashed our luggage in a locker at the train station in Bergen and just traveled with a couple of small bags. Enjoy your trip. Norway is gorgeous ( and expensive!)

A few suggestions for walking tours around Flåm: http://www.visitflam.com/en/hiking/
Most of the tourist places have a similar web page which will include walking routes - so when you have decided where you are going try a bit of Googling to find them.
