one week in central Austria
I will be spending one week in a condo in Schladming, 56 miles from salzburg. we are renting a car and want to know what are the best day trips that can be done by driving or train. the dates are June 5-12. this is my first trip to europe so i would like to take in the most important and exciting things possible.

I can help! Are you staying at the Alpine Ridge Resort? I spent a week there with my family in 1999 and had a fantastic time. It was my first trip to Europe also--what a perfect place to start. I can email you my journal if you'd like: [email protected]

Schladming for summer skiing? A bad joke. I think they refer to Ramsau/Dachstein glacier, but this is a VERY small area (two lifts or so).
Kitzsteinhorn is a good option for summer skiing, but then you should stay in Kaprun, or at least in Zell am See. Schladming is quite a distance away.

seniortrip,
The first thing I'd do is get a guidebook about Austria, perhaps one that includes Bavaria, in southern Germany. That will give you an idea of what to expect and what your choices will be.
I think the condo club is the same one we used. We were very happy and comfortable there. Again, if you'd like a copy of our journal, send me a message at the address above and I can email it to you. There are a lot of things we would have done differently, so know that it's not a perfect itinerary. Once you have a rough draft itinerary, post here again and you'll get more specific suggestions.
