Will consider staying an extra day in Positano to do day trip to Pompeii/Herculaneum.

The shortest route for Positano/Pompeii would be the Sita bus from Positano to Meta (it reaches Meta 25 minutes before it would reach Sorrento and Meta is closer to Pompeii than Sorrento). At Meta, you would change to the Circumvesuviana train. Not all Positano/Sorrento buses stop at Meta, so check for current schedules when you get to the coast. Currently, a day ticket costs 7.60€. This would cover the Positano/Meta bus, the Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii (and on to Herculaneum if you decided to do that after Pompeii). It also covers the EAV bus.
