One last comment about cars:
I used AutoEurope and Kemwell for decades in Europe.
About five years ago, I saw the light and found SIXT. I could not have been happier with every single rental experience I've had with them in the past five years--probably ten or eleven rentals.
They are a German company set to expand in the US.
Booking directly through an agency offers quite a few benefits, as Starrs has pointed out. One of these is the much larger selection of cars you will be offered when booking direct.
If you try to book SIXT through a broker, you will see a fraction of the choices.
I also get the direct phone number of the manager at the rental location, in case of any problems.

For your train ticket question, have a look at the Seat61 website. Find the section on France and it should give you information on fares, train types, whether to book ahead and seat reservations, if needed or possible. You don't use that website to buy tickets but it tells you the train companies in France and how to purchase.
