I'll be staying in Milan for one night in February. I'm looking for suggestions on where to stay that would be convenient to the train, the airport and other worthwhile attractions. I will be staying on a Sunday night and most of Monday and I am also curious as to what is open on those days. I'd like to find something to do at night and during the day rather than staying in my hotel room.

Do you want to do things IN Milan, or take a day trip somewhere by train? It has been over 30 years since I've stayed in Milan for a few days just to see the sights within the city, so I'm not up on the hotel locations at all. But if you are looking for something to do for the day FROM Milan, how about spending the day in Bergamo? That's what I did all day Sunday the last time I was staying in Milan (three years ago), and I loved it.

Topping. I have the same question. I'm staying in Milan for 1 night and will travel by train (probably the central train station). Would like to be close to the train station and the major attractions. A 3-star hotel is preferable. Thank you.

Milan is pretty sprawling, so it's not really possible to be near the sights, the airport and the train station. In my humble opinion, when short on time, it's worth a few extra dollars to maximize enjoyment. So to make the most of your brief stay, I'd plan on staying in the city center, near the Duomo. You can visit the Duomo itself (impressive), wander the cool little streets around Via Della Spiga, maybe check out the opera house, even pop over to see the Last Supper, all without too much difficulty. There are some great restaurants and cafes in the area too for your evening activity.

Kenman: We will have a few hours in Milan...arriving by train before we have to leave for the airport later in the evening. Can you suggest some restaurants or cafes in the vicinity of the Duomo that would be a nice, casual place for dinner before we have to leave for the airport. We won't have dress-up clothes. But we enjoy good food and good service. Thank you.

Suntravlr, there are probably much better resources on this than I, but ... my wife and I had two nice meals at pretty casual places - one was a family sort of place called Milanese or Trattoria Milanese, I think, and the other was the casual place associated with the famous Peck's market. (I think there's both a high-end and a less formal one - we did the latter and really liked it). Both were within a couple of blocks of the Duomo. Bon appetito!

The area around Milano's central train station isn't tops, however, it is alright and you can find a decent enough hotel for just one night.

A couple options are:
The Hotel Gritti=a good value for the central location, within 5 minutes' walk from the Duomo. Helpful staff, the hotels rooms and bathrooms are small but for a one-night stay, are certainly bearable.

The Hotel Berna (4*)= 5 mins walk from the Centrale train station. The rates include a full buffet breakfast. Reviews have indicated a very helpful staff and very clean, nice rooms with free mini-bars (Cokes, waters, juices, etc) in each room. Check out this website for deals: www.ratestogo.com.

There are many different hotel options available, dependent on your choice of budget, midrange, luxury. I would suggest looking on www.venere.com

The transportation system in and around Milano is great, you can easily take a bus to the sites, walk around, etc rather than stay in your room. Note that most everything (shops, stores, etc) will be closed on a Sunday night. However, you should definitely be able to find restaurants open.
