Since no one will let you go to the Sherlock Holmes Museum, you might stop by the Sherlock Holmes pub, which has a recreation of the famous sitting room upstairs, as well as "memorabilia" from the various stories on the wall. http://www.sherlockholmespub.com/ Surely no one will begrudge you a pint of bitter.

Another Sherlockian destination is the Criterian Bar in Piccadilly. I haven't been there since its renovation in the late eighties, but at one time it boasted a plaque (on the right, as you enter) commemorating the meeting between Dr Watson and Stamford, dresser at Bart's, who introduced him to Sherlock Holmes.

hi naxos,

linking up with previous threads, you can get a no 11? bus from st. Pauls down ludgate hill and up fleet street, getting off opposite the "Royal Courts of Justice" [a mock gothic pile by Temple Bar] and walk down Temple Lane into the temple. Get there at lunchtime and you can get a sandwich and eat your picnic in the lovely inner temple gardens or if you are well dressed, sneak into Middle temple for lunch. you might also like to look at Temple Church, which features in a certain novel about codes and leonardo, or something like that!

regards, ann

then walk back through covent garden to your hostel.

We paid a brief visit to the Sherlock Holmes Museum. It isn't at 221 but a little way down the street. It was fun to go up the stairs and see the Victorian-style rooms with memorabilia laid out. It helps your enjoyment if you are very familiar with the stories. As we were leaving, we passed Sherlock himself, complete with cap, cape, and cane, walking toward us on Baker Street. If you have a little time and a few extra pounds, it is fun!

Thanks Guys - your giving me great information.

yk, I enjoyed your trip report (much more than the report I was supposed to be doing at work-lol!)

Fantastic Fra-Diavolo! I am totally sold on that pub - how fun. Thanks for the link.

My wife likes the idea of London Walks so I think we might do one during the day - we can do the Mayfair walk or perhaps The Blitz - lots to choose from on Thursdays. I like the Temple area idea for sure.

Thanks again,
Naxos

I can't recommend the London Walk highly enough (apart from the ripper one which isn't just pants. It's old man's pants).
