Olive oil discovery in Umbria

We'll have eleven days to explore Umbria and while we won't be doing any wine tasting (we don't drink alcohol) one of the things we are very interested in is olive oil and are keen to find, taste and purchase Umbrian olive oil while touring the area.

It would also be heavenly to wander through some olive groves as well. I love olive trees.

Someday we'll return for the harvest.

I have read here and elsewhere that Le Case Gialle produces a good olive oil. How does one go about arranging for a visit there?

Are there any producers you would suggest we visit?

Are there any particular shops you would suggest we visit that offer tasting? We'll be staying in Spello and Orvieto, but will drive most any distance to sample some good stuff. I have read there is an olive oil museum in Trevi. Is there also one in Torgiano? Are these worthwhile visiting?

Many thanks.

This is the site for the people who operate the "olive oil Museum."

I've not been so have no comment.

You might research the Ronci Olive mill near Bevagna. I have not been there.

More on the olive museum-

A couple of other links-

I've stayed at Le Case Gialle a few times and sampled the olive oil- it is always excellent. If available, they sell it to people staying there, but I'm not sure about visitors. I think it may depend on quantity on hand. There is no shop/store. You could email them to find out if they have any they can sell you and if not, who they recommend. I think a lot depends on how much they produce each year. I have ordered bottles and had them shipped to me in the USA, but only just after the harvest and before they run out. Yum!

Take a look at the web site of Marfuga (dot) it

I believe they have tours and they certainly have great olive oil.

If you send an email, let them know that Olio2go recommended that you visit.

There is an "olive oil road" (strada dell'olio) in Umbria -- that covers the 5 major areas of olive oil production in Umbria. You can visit oil mills and tasting rooms along the way.

You can also arrange an olive oil tour with the excellent and knowledgeable Alessandra: http://www.discoveringumbria.it/en/oliveoil_tour.html I have had numerous guests book her day tour and they all come back raving about it. Enjoy Umbria!

Wow. Thanks for all the great suggestions and information. It will keep me busy for a while. I have been sucked into an olive oil vortex! An organized tour sounds good, but so does wandering on our own.

I will contact Le Case Gialle to see if they think they will have any product left in June.

Thanks!

I am the US agent for Le Case Gialle olive oil. And, while this sounds important the only thing that I've done is to fill out a government form several years ago.

I'm sure that Mauro will sell you some oil and probably give you a sample, too. Le Case Gialle is a few kilometers west of Bevagna and they have 700 trees. I buy a "six pack" yearly, except that 2009 was a disastrous year and I had to go without. BTW, Mauro has won several Italy wide awards for his oil, and I've gone to tastings with him (he wins always).

DRJ - Did you plan to import oil for resale originally? I know some ladies that started doing several years ago. They went to an olive oil trade show in Verona a week or two ago.

KY: Mauro had the forms sent to me from Washington. All I've done is to fill out the forms. I do know that he ships oil to many people who have stayed at LCG.
