If you're interested in something really unique just a few miles outside of Oban, you can stay in an authentic 16th-century castle. We were there two years ago and it was an unforgettable experience.

I stayed in the Royal Hotel 2 years ago but it was in need of a makeover. The location was good though.
Take a look at this website.

Same feelings about The Royal and we stayed there 5 years ago...it must be VERY tired by now. But if you can see it as faded glory or shabby chic instead of just a bit dreary, they serve a fabulous breakfast, the best of our trip to Scotland.

will you have a car? I personally wouldn't stay IN Oban but somewhere in the surrounding countryside. I have stayed in the town but only when I needed to catch an early morning ferry.
If you do want to stay in town - this one is nice http://www.obanguesthouse.co.uk/tariff.asp
A few miles out - check these

Nowhere in Oban is much good, these days. They all do faded grandeur. Dungallan House is probably the best of a bad lot.
I went and looked up visitscotland in an attempt to remember the name of the last place I stayed on the Esplanade and am shocked (but not surprised) to discover that there are only 4 hotels in membership. In the whole town.
Just shows it's a seller's market
