Hi Sandralist,

Can you stay within the village of Ortisei and still hike directly from there? It looks as though it is in the region you mention is best, but a big village?

I've never stayed in Ortisei but I think you can hike straight out of Ortisei to beautiful paths. Why don't you put up a separate post and ask? Lots of people here have stayed there.

Ortisei is very central to the large area that includes all of the most beautiful scenery. It is a ski resort town, as is Cortina d"Ampezzo, and almost all of the towns around there. The towns are utlitarian, mainly, rather than super-charmers. If you want a charming village feel, it is best to pick a town or lodging between Corvara and Brunico in the Alto Adige. That is also an extremely beautiful setting, with lots of hiking trails straight out of the villages -- but it is further north if you are coming from Padova and going back south again.

But if you put up a separate post with the word Dolomiti in the title, asking for help from people who have stayed in the Dolomiti, you are likely to get a lot of responses with first-hand details.

We stayed in Ortisei and loved it. There are a few lifts directly up to the mountains from town. It is also a quick trip the the other towns and lifts in the area.

Great idea - as always - sandralist.

Jamikins your pics and report are amazing. We have up to six nights free to spend there at this stage (maybe we will do five and one night in or near Verona on the way back to dropping the car off). I am just worried my friend will get a little bored as she isn't as into mountains or hiking as I am, but I am sure there are other things to do too!

I will take sandralist's advice and start a new thread to encourage more discussion on Dolomites!

We stayed in Ortisei and took a gondola up one day and a funicular up another day, both from the valley to different areas to hike. Both day trips were incredible with many hiking options at the top. The Dolomites are breathtaking!

Glad you enjoyed them RT2015!

You might also want to do a day trip to Bolzano to see the iceman museum, it was fascinating.

Enjoy your trip!

Thanks jamikins ... As long as the foot injury I'm trying to keep at bay doesn't get worse it will be a perfect trip!

Great photos from jamikins and others inspired us to book a week in Ortisei next summer. We are taking teens, and are not concerned about lack of interest in hiking ("you WILL enjoy yourselves" LOL), how can that spectacular scenery not enthrall? Certainly looks like plenty of options for a week.

I was told on another thread not to correct apparent autocorrect typos, but I think the lifts being referred to are the phone BOOTH lifts, not phone book. (Even though phone booths don't exist in Italy.)

Oops, yes booths! Thanks! Not referring to Italian phone booths but the general shape of phone booths everywhere.
