North Kerry

We'll be traveling thru north Kerry on our way from Galway to Dingle in late February/early March. Are there any suggestions for nice small towns to stop and spend the night. Apparently there are a number of places to stay in Ballybunnion, but it sounds like its primarily a golf town.

Thanks for your help

Chuck - we will be traveling the same locations late march and will be staying in Ennis at Rose Cottege - www.clare-rosecottege.com - I have read some good reports about this particular B&B. We stayed in Ennis on our last trip to Ireland and found it to be a great little town - good pubs, shopping and nice people. Hope this helps - have a great trip!

It is quite possible to go from Galway to Dingle in a day.Of course if you stop off at The Cliffs of Moher,Ailwee Cave,The Burren,Bunratty Folk Park,King John`s Castle,The Hunt Museum and Adare it will take longer.North Kerry has a Round Tower at Rattoo (near Ballyduff) and Ardfert has a ruined Cathedral and Monastery.Ballyheigue is a pleasant small village on the coast with a hotel.Probably better to spend the night in or near Tralee which has a population of 20,000 and lots of restaurants,a Waterworld, steam train, museum.a windmill and Siamsa Tire Folk Theatre

Chuck,

You may want to re-consider where to spend an overnight between Galway and Dingle. Rather than staying in North Kerry, consider staying in south Clare in Miltown Malbay. There's a B & B called Berry Lodge, and it's noteworthy for at least two very good reasons: It's very reasonably priced, and it features a first-rate gourmet restaurant on the premises. Indeed, the B & B - which, by the way, is basic but very tidy - is also a cooking school. You'll eat exceptionally well - both breakfast and dinner - at Berry Lodge.

As regards North Kerry, Ardfert does offer some historic sights, but they're not worth a special trip. Ballybunion, meanwhile, has little to offer; that is, unless you're a golfer.

Miltown is not too far a drive from the River Shannon ferry operating between Counties Clare and Kerry. En route to Dingle you might consider a short excursion along the Shannon Estuary to Scattery Island, worthy of your time, especially if you're interested in Irish history. The island hasn't been inhabited for at least 30 years, but features a former monastic settlement, a round tower, and countless rabbits.

Best of luck.

Thanks for your help. Are there other small towns in North Kerry that might be nice to stay in?
