Normandy, Brittany & Giverny in Oct

We are hoping to go to Normandy, Brittany & stop off at Giverny also in mid Oct. We've now been told that it will be 'too cold' at that time . Since we want to visit the sites etc. & not use the beaches , how bad can this be. I also read that Giverny & the American Museum there are closed in Oct. but I've read on this board that people have visited there in Oct. Does anyone have a recomendation for a reasonable place to stay just a few miles from the gardens- under $90 with breakfast if this is possible. At this point in our planning we hope to pick up a car at CDG & drive to our place to stay, rest a few hours & then vist the gardens, stay one night & continue on to Normandy. We feel more comfortable doing the the resting part as we've never picked up a car before in Paris & imagine that getting out or the airport will be an ordeal for us seniors. Any comments on any of this would be helpful.
Thanks, Paul

Giverny is open until the end of October. Too cold for whom? We usually found October to be very comfortable with a los of sunshine. Check Giverny Monet museum website and there are some recommendations on accommodations. Let me know what you find as we are planning on staying in the same area in the end of September.

Thanks for the web site info. I'll look into that. Does anyone have any other comments as to places they've stayed or the logistics of picking up the car at CDG & getting out of the airport heading toward Giverny?

We visited Giverny, Rouen and Normandy in October. It was a bit windy and cool but not uncomfortable. (We're from So. Calif., so anything under 60 degrees is cold!)

We did Giverny, Honfleur, Mont-St-Michel, and the Loire last October. A bit chilly, and some fairly heavy rain (mostly overnight) at times, but not uncomfortable if you're dressed in layers.

We stayed the first night in Paris, picked up a car near the ring road the next morning and stopped in Giverny on our way to Honfleur for an overnight.

We did this area in July so cannot help on the weather.

We picked up our car at CDG and drove past Giverny to a small town outside of Caen. We stayed at the Manior des Tourpes. The owner is American, his wife is French. They have 4 rooms in a very nice old mansion in a peaceful setting. We got the large room for 400F per night including breakfast...about $64 per night. I recommend this place. Mike Cassady is the owner. Email is [email protected]. This for us was a good location to explore Normandy and the area. Mike also very helpful with maps, etc.

We finished at this location and returned to Paris to stay at the $500 per night George V. My wife still says Mike's place was more fun. Hope this helps.

The weather in late Oct and early Nov the last 2 years when we have been in this area has been lovely. I never even unpacked my coat, even when we got to London ~! But who knows..just go , enjoy, and don't think that a little cold or chill can stop you!It really won't be freezing, and I am from Fl ..in fact I relish the cooler temps!

I do have a very nice place near Giverny and will look it up for you later and post again!

No problem at CDG...we always go there to pick up car after a rest time in Paris...the short drive to Giverney should be no trouble, just take your time !

Thanks all. Jodi & Bob- you both answered that you had picked up your car at CDG. Jodi- what did you mean by 'rest time'? Did you mean you stayed over in Paris overnight or what? Also , do either of you remember exact directions of how to get onto the N13. I've been told that getting out of the airport is a real hassle.

Interesting timing your topping this, Paul - - any interest in this becoming a "Fodorites' trip"? There could be other interest in Brittany and other Atlantic destinations from a group of "us" this fall.

See the thread about 40th anniversary.

Best wishes,

Rex
