Nicest City in Switzerland

So what's the nicest, prettiest and most interesting city for a Switzerland vacation? Why?

Yikes! What an impossible question! Montreux? Vevey? Lausanne? Locarno? Bellinzona?

I'll give you my favorite region... the Ticino. For me there is nothing like the incredible beauty of the Centovalli and the peaceful quiet of the north end of Lago Maggiore. And of course the incredible castles of Bellinzona.

But then I'm going to the Engadine very soon and who knows what I'll say then!

We've only been to four places: Bern, Locarno, Luzern and Zurich, but have trained through the Berner region to Domodossola and through eastern Switzerland to Austria. Based on that limited experience, I'd go with Luzern--beautiful lake, mountains, great swiss food and a wonderfully preserved Altstadt. Our all-time favorite.

I've been to 3 places - Luzern, Lugano, and Zurich. Out of the 3, I would say that Luzern is the nicest. Very picturesque and the residents are quite friendly and helpful as well!

It pretty much depends on your specific interests. I must admit I have not spent most of my time in the bigger cities of Zurich, Basel, Geneva, Lausanne. Short day trips only. I prefer the smaller ones.

Exception: Berne - I spent five nights there and did not get bored. But you should know that I am very, very much interested in architecture, art, history etc. Berne is figures on the UNESCO world heritage list for its perfectly preserved medieval old town. And in addition to all this, Berne offers fantastic opportunities for day trips to the Bernese Alps, Lakes Neuchatel and Biel, the Jura mountains etc.

I think, however, that Zurich and Basel are very much underrated. By the way, IMO you almost cannot go wrong with Swiss cities: if you really go along with locals and soak up the authentic local charm you won't be bored.

For the smaller ones ... I second Grasshopper's choice of Locarno/Bellinzona. Lively Italian atmosphere with Swiss perfection.

My first choice is Luzern. Stepping out of the train station is like walking into a storybook. Beautiful lake, river, covered wooden bridge, the mountains etc. The Bernese Oberland villages of Wengen and Murren aren't too shaby either.
There just may not be a right or wrong answer to your question.
Enjoy
Larry J

How about the Kandersteg, at the foot of several mountains, for its natural beauty, its breath-taking chair lift up to Lake Oechinensee, the babbling brook which runs through town, the many pubs and restaurants, etc....The proximity to both Zermatt and Lucerne......
Or small Brienz, on gorgeous Lake Brienz, the cleanest lake in Sw., with its centuries-old blackened wooden houses and the Open Air Museum of Ballenberg--acres of repesentative swiss house from all over in a mountain setting?

Lucerne is beautiful - nice restaurants...but I love Lugano (the lake area is lovely and its fun to see palm trees in Switzerland) and would love to go back! My husband and I had one of the best meals in Lugano - a highlight of our two week trip! The lakes are beautiful.

Wow, did everyone miss the Grindlewald
area. Three of the highest peaks in Switz. Eiger, Monk and the amazing Junfrau. The train to the top of the Junfrau? Stunning. Murren and Wengen
all in the same area. This area is also very close to Lucerne.

I have to place a vote for Montreaux. The location is stunning - overlooking Lake Geneva - and it is the perfect spot for day trips to Vevey, Lausanne, Geneva and Evian. It also has a beautiful castle called the Chateaux de Chillon and some great restaurants.

It is best to tour various areas of Switzerland as the mountains are breathtaking.
We loved the very small pedestrian only town of Zermatt the gateway to the Matterhorn. From Zematt we ascended to Gonergrat to view the awesome Matterhorn and were surrounded by moutaintops--incredible.
We were in awe at the sight of picturebook Lucerne and it was fun to take a scenic boat ride on the lake. Lake Geneva was also beautiful after we toured Castle Chillon so it's hard to choose only one city. Leave time to see the Bernese Oberland.
Several trains cross over Switzerland such as the Glacier Express which leaves out of a major city. You can use a search engine and find out more about trains--"Switzerland-trains" or Switzerland-Glacier Express". One train also ends near the Italian border.
