Like any major city, I'm sure there are suburbs or towns near Paris that are safer than others (i.e., lower crime rates due to the enthusiasm of the police forces or general economic factors). Is it so unreasonable to ask for a little input along those lines? I'd probably come here to get a general idea before I'd go searching the web for statistical data on crime rates. When I ask these kinds of questions, I know there are no guarantees, just looking for a little insight from those who might know the area.
I once left a box from a "lap desk" in plain sight in my car while living in San Francisco. Who the hell would want a lap desk, right? Well, someone thought they did. Lucky for them it was filled with a stereo and wadded $1 bills I had used for packing material (the bills were to pay off a bet I'd made with the person to whom I was also sending the stereo). If these same thieves were in the Paris area, I'm sure they wouldn't hesitate to steal a box of "grout"...you never know what might be inside!
I only wish I were familiar enough with the environs to offer an opinion. Maybe after another 50 or so trips...
