Nice or Lucerne?
Myself and two others are planning a month in Europe, by backpack/hostel.

The current plan is to go from Rome to Nice and then from Nice to Lucerne. We only plan to spend the day in Nice (In Monte Carlo to be exact) and then 2 nights in Lucerne. After Lucerne we plan to head to Paris.

My question is then, is it worth going to Lucerne or would the extra days be better spent in Nice? The reason I ask is that to go from Nice to Lucerne is a bit of a hassle (10 hrs by train to Geneva then 3 from Geneva to Lucerne) and it would be easier in my mind to go from Nice to Paris than Lucerne-Geneva-Paris.

That is just my thinking, but I have heard that Lucerne is gorgeous and I want to know from you guys if you think its worth the stop.

There is a through train from Nice to Lucerne. Train No. IC343 leaves Nice at 1001, and arrives Lucerne at 1935. The train is Swiss, carries Observation Cars and a Restaurant car. The Observation cars are handy because the scenery for the most part is worth the ride in itself. If you can spare a day or two in Lucerne there is lots to see and do. The onward journey from Lucerne to Paris is via Basle.Of the two I would prefer Lucerne to Nice.

Unless the Monte Carlo Casino is a major attraction why go to Nice at all.
From Rome you can take a train to Rapallo or Santa Maragaethe on the Ligure coast, and see Portofino etc.Much nicer than Nice many would say. From Rapallo it is half an hour or so to Genoa, where you can pick up the IC343 train I mentioned earlier. You miss the French Riviera, but save a lot of time if critical.

I believe it is definitly worth it to go to Lucerne, I was there 10 years ago, and I loved it. The views are breathtaking. I believe Nice is overated, especially if you are going to Monaco. I would see the Casino, and then head for Lucerne. With the money you are saving by backpacking, you could pick up a nice switch watch.

Check out Easy Jet (www.easyjet.com).

You can get one way Nice - Geneva for under $100 then take the train from Geneva airport to Luzern.

I love Nice and we are not big city people. We've been twice in the last four years and are considering going again this year. There's lots to do in the surrounding area and to my surprise I loved Monaco and the hill villages near Nice. You need more than one day there.
