Nice Hotel near FCO airport in Rome?

My husband and I will be traveling to Italy in June staying the first week in Tuscany and the second week in Positano. Our flight back to the states leaves at 10:30am. We usually come back to Rome and spend the night before the flight home but thought maybe someone knew of a nice hotel closer to the airport (along the cost maybe) that is a good alternative. We're not into big chain hotels so if the only alternative is a Hilton, Marriott, etc at the airport, we'd rather stay in Rome. Any ideas? Thank you.

If you are coming in from Positano for the one night, you might be coming in late to savor all you can from Almafi Coast so you can do what I usually do, stay at the Hilton. We check in, return our car, have a dinner, do last minute repacking. But we have earlier flights than you do, so it would be easier for you to get a cab in the morning from Roma. But in that case, just stay in Rome, no other hotels or local places are worth the trouble of finding in the airport area. I have tried that route too and it becomes more of a hassle than it is worth.

We just left Rome this past Monday and spent the night in a hotel in Fiumicino (2 minutes away from the airport) for 102 Euros. We were referred to it by the Hilton management after I found out a night at the hilton was $230 (the lowest available rate). It was called Hotel Castelli or something like that and there was another one right next door called the Mach 2. The room was dingy, the shower didn't drain, the towels were like little napkins. It was okay, but definitely not worth 102 Euros and my husband would've vastly preferred the cushiness of the Hilton. I think with a 10:30 departure you would have time to stay in Rome and take a taxi out, but if it is a weekday perhaps traffic would be a concern?

Also, if you stay at the Hilton, you could return your car that evening and not pay for the extra next day as you can walk from the Hilton to the airport (they probably also have a shuttle). That is a cost savings. The Fiumicino hotels are not within walking distance. We were committed to a three-day minimum for the car rental which is why it didn't matter to us. We had to pay for Monday no matter what.

Amanda:

We stayed at one of the hotels by the airport, Cancelli Rossa. It was not a good choice. If I were not going to stay in Rome, I would stay at the Hilton. My husband is not very particular but he was in shock over this place. The pictures on the Internet looked fine but the place was a real downer after returning from the Santa Caterina in Amalfi. Spend the extra money, you will be glad.
Kay

We stayed at the Hilton our last night in Italy. I also, wanted something special our last night. We had an early morning flight and didn't want to worry about being to the airport on time. The Hilton was very convenient for returning our rental car and reaching our terminal in the a.m. We arrived in the early afternoon and took the shuttle into Rome for about six hours and had dinner. I would definitely stay there again for the convenience and for the opportunity to spend our last night in Italy with no hassle. Have fun!
