The roof top terrace rooms at the Hotel Margutta (Via Laurina No. 34) are wonderful. I stayed there in Dec. 1994 and couldn't recommend the hotel more highly. At that time, the nicest rooms were $75-80 U.S.; no doubt off-season rates. It is located on a quite side street only a few minute walk from the Spanish Steps.

My husband and I stayed at La Residenza several years ago. Our room was very comfortable, reasonably sized, and quiet. I don't know whether the hotel has a roof garden; I recall having breakfast in a downstairs room. I also recall requesting our coffees to be made for us, individually. The breakfast was served buffet style and the coffee came from an urn...not what we wanted. That's the worst comment about La Residenza!

The small terraces at the Hotel Margutta are at the entrance to each of the 7th floor rooms, so access is limited to the occupants. My experiences have also been mixed with the under $90 hotels (particulaly in Paris), but this hotel was a true exception. I did stay at a Residenza in Florence and was very impressed. I understand from someone who does alot of traveling in Italy that it is a chain of moderate to high end (not U.S. high end, that is) hotels. For a great restaurant in Rome, try Da Mario near the Spanish Steps. It was superb and filled with locals. E-mail me if you want the address. Tom in New Orleans

Hello. My husband and I are travelling to Rome next week. We are already booked at the River Hotel in Rome. The accommodations were made by British Airways as part of their special they were running.
I have been unable to find the River listed in any travel guide; however, the agent at BA told me it was a newer, multi-level hotel with private baths and break fast included.
Have you ever heard of this hotel?
Also, I'd be interested in any more local, non-touristy restaurants you may know about.
Thanks.
