Any suggestions? Has anyone heard if they are scaling back celebrations due to 9/11? I know alot of cities in the US are.

I wasn't going to respond to this as I'm no fan of New Year's Eve (one of my least favorite holidays), but since no one else has much, I'll tell you what I know which is partly speculation and partly from reading current press. I don't know what kind of celebration you are really talking about to be scaled back, that's sort of why I don't know what to say. Most of what goes on is private, more or less, and not something you can really scale back -- people walking around on the streets, going to bars/restaurants, etc, The only official things I know of are the parade the next day (which is still going on, I know that, it goes from 10th arr near corners of Bonne Nouvelle and St-Denis and towards the Opera in the 9th) and fireworks near Eiffel Tower--those do not always occur, however, and I think the govt is somewhat lax in letting people know whether they will or not. If I recall, they didn't happen last year and they didn't announce it much ahead of time so no one knew. What else are you expecting, because I don't know of anything else official by the govt. Now, I am curious what you mean by cities in the US scaling back celebrations, where did you hear that and what do you mean? The only city I know of that does something is NY (Times Sq) and I would guess maybe they are scaling back, but maybe not. I live in Wash DC and maybe I'm out of it, but as far as I know the city doesn't do anything for NY Eve--it's totally private, people go out to restaurants or clubs but that's their business and nothing that the city can scale back. So, don't expect anything different in Paris, but I know of nothing special for you to expect, either, except maybe fireworks, but who knows on that. If you want to chance it, hang out around the Eiffel Tower area where you can see them.

I have heard, and this is merely something I heard, that NY is not scaling back the New Years celebration, they are going to have a party, and no one is stopping them! Go New York

Christine: I recently read a newspaper report that nearly two dozen U.S. cities have cancelled their First Night celebrations for this year. Don't know if D.C. is on that list or not, but feel sure they've had one for years...are you not familiar with these festivities? For the original poster, I think Pariscope has a website, you moight try them in a couple of weeks to see what's on for New Years.

"First Night" is the politically correct title for "New Year's Eve without alcohol". Those who drink (and aren't particularly P.C.) still call it New Year's Eve.
