comment for tashak above: whatever reason for the original developement of debit cards (allegedly for people with bad credit?) some of us who like them now like having the item or expense paid for directly, without having to keep track of and anticipate a surprising credit card bill arriving a month later. It's forced discipline, just like following a diet I suppose.
Some people can just watch themselves, others prefer more structure.
Like djkbooks, I still prefer the debit card for daily life at home, and I get milage points for every purchase, but when I travel, as a precaution against any vacation angst I will leave the debit card at home and travel with an atm-only card, for cash withdrawals, and a credit card.

OK, I guess everybody now has the "word"!!!
I have an ATM (Visa Debit Card). I enjoy the convenience using the VISA portion to make purchases here in the U.S. without having to write a check. When I travel overseas, I call the bank and have them "disable" the VISA portion of the card. It works well -- It is then just an ATM card that must be used with PIN.
Just one more thing -- I would highly recommend when traveling overseas to get a PIN for your credit card. You just never know when you might need it to get a cash advance in emergencies (i.e. you lose your ATM card).
