Building on the first L...

Two words, 18 letters in all. The L is the 17th letter.

Clue: This book, one of the most celebrated illuminated books in the world, was created on an island in the North Sea.

Not Kells, no. That was created in Ireland.

The book I'm talking about was created on an island in the North Sea.

Phil guessed it...

I was talking about the Lindisfarne Gospels. The book was created in the early 700's AD, on Holy Island (the island's ancient name was Lindisfarne), off the coast of England in the North Sea.

The Lindisfarne Gospels are really a masterwork. And the new British Library, where they are on display, is nothing short of spectacular.

OK here goes (an easy one):

Building on the A as 2nd of 5 Letters:

Its name is supposed to mean "Goat Island", but today "Gold Island" would be more fitting (no, not Faroe)

Sorry for being late. I have just come in from watching a football (soccer) game. Had to support my local team defending its position atop our national football league :->

OK, lets do another simple one:

Building on the a as 5th of 5 letters: After lopping off its tail, this European island can be used to brew beer.
