Yes.

stevewith, I'm all for VISITING the hilltowns. Absolutely. Why else go? However, with a car, it's just easier and quicker to drive in and out of towns on the flat -- so more time for sightseeing.<<<

Staying somewhere like Pienza has nothing to do with being retired or limited mobility. It has easy parking and easy driving in and out. It also has fantastic views of the countryside. Montalcino or Montepulciano are more difficult drives in and out and parking is harder to come by.

>>>but someone pointed out that it's likely car rentals will have a 3 day minimum<<<

If you are renting directly from the company, you can get a one day rental. If you rent from a broker such as AutoEurope, they have a 3 day minimum.

>>>(Does anybody else think steve is Z?)<<<

No question in my mind ... not that there's anything wrong with that! ;-)

Holy Smokes! Opening this up to find sooooooo many replies full of knowledgeable advice, opinions & tips makes me feel like I struck gold, and a welcomed novice, thank you all.

Jean - the link containing all the hotel/B&B recommendations will keep me busy for a while! And clearly the follow up reply at the end shows bobthenavigator knows stuff. The link containing the scenic drives will be helpful too.

Mimar - thanks for the train info, we definitely need that.

Stevewith - Fiancé probably favors modern history, but he would find interest in any/all history of the places we are visiting, particularly in commerce.

Dayle - thank you for all your perspectives, that gives me a lot of targets in my research. I have been on the AC in mid September as well, and it certainly was hot, but clear as a bell & glorious. We decided to commit to a 09/13 arrival.

Kybourbon - do you know how I rent direct & not from a broker?

To everyone - I think I understand the point of flatter towns offering ease of coming & going. And, no we aren't the type to set alarms & "go go go" fitting detailed excursions in non-stop. We like to have a few definite "must do's", and a few "maybe dos" in our pocket if we feel inclined and go about our stay in a "see where the day takes us" kind of way. Particularly on this trip, being a honeymoon. All in all it doesn't seem like one can go wrong in this area. Especially with all the guidance I'm getting here from you guys.

Now, what is "Z"?

yeayeadetroitgirl,

I had no problems driving in/out of Montalcino every day. The hotel owners took charge of my car for parking. Parked and retrieved it for me every day.

Z is an old poster who keeps coming back with new names. More than that you don't need to know.

Buon viaggio!

Lucky you, Dayle. We had an unfortunate incident in a tight hotel parking lot in Montalcino. Maybe, in your case, too many inept foreign drivers were damaging the hotel building, so the hotellier decided to take over.

If you stay in Pienza, I highly recommend a drive over to Sant’Angelo in Colle near Montalcino for lunch at Trattoria Il Leccio, followed by a visit to the Sant' Antimo Abbey to hear the gregorian chants.

We also enjoyed stopping at Villa I Cipressi which is on the road leading to Grosseto near Montalcino to purchase some of their amazing honey.

Loved shopping at Bottega Del Naturista in Pienza - amazing selection of cheese and other foodstuffs and vising Palazzo Piccolomini in the center of town - fantastic view from the garden!
