I am thinking about renting a car for the day to visit the castles. The only problem is that I do not speak, nor read German. Would this be troublesome or can I get by without German?

I personally think renting a car is a great idea. We rented a car for our 2 week trip in Germany/Austria in May and had absolutely no problems at all, and neither of us speak much German. The road system is excellent and the signs are basically universal. If you can drive in the US, you can drive in Germany.

If you rent a car, you can add quite a few things to your day. In addition to the two castles (which, by the way, we thoroughly enjoyed, touristy or not) you could visit nearby Linderhof and Oberammergau. There is also quite a bit to do around the Fussen area. The area is beautiful and the little town is cute and a great place for lunch after viewing the castles. The tegelberg gondola isn't too far away and offers splendid views of the countryside.

Regardless of what you do, you will have a wonderful time. We spent a few weeks in Bavaria and had a wonderful time. The area is stunning and we can't wait to go back!
