Nerja or Marbella?
I will be on a 10 day tour of Southern Spain in June. After the tour, I want to spend 6 nts in one town. I have narrowed my choices down to Nerja or Marbella. Any ideas as to which one is best? After a tour, I would like to relax and take it easy, but I still would like to be around people and do some sightseeing.

Anna

P.S. Travel agent keeps pushing Marbella, but I am not completely convinced.

I have not been to Nerja, but the posts I have read in the past have indicated that Nerja is absolutely beautiful, laid back, charming, and unspoilt to some degree. Marbella is more touristy and concrete with a lot of night life. If I were going, I'd split it up. 3 days in Nerja with a day trip to the Alhambra in Granada, and 3 days in Marbella with a day trip to Ronda. If you must do 6 days in one place, Marbella has more to offer and more access to day trips and such.

Nerja for sure. Marbella is modern, concrete, high rises, etc. Nerja is quaint with a walkway along the shore. Was there for two nights and would go back in a heart beat. There's a great restaurant overlooking the beach, on the north/east side of town that serves up a great paella. The name escapes me, but it starts with an "A". Rent a car and tour the Pueblo Blancos (white villages) for a couple of days. Definately go to Ronda and Granada, if you don't on your tour.

While you are in Nerja, rent a car and explore the nearby caves and the charming village of Frigiliana. It is "picture postcard beautiful." I bought a wonderful watercolor from an artist (Klaus Hinkel)last year and every time I look at it, it reminds me of my vacation. Enjoy

Nerja is lovely and friendly; you should have a great time. It has more English-language signs than I've seen in the rest of Spain. The beaches around Nerja are small, busy and have stairs to climb. You may want to stop and see La Herradura beach on the way to Granada for a change. It's large, quiet (especially at the west end) and, unfortunately, a pebble beach, but you can rent a chair and umbrella.
