This might not be the place you are seeking - - it may be that the hotel right next to the ferry stop is named Grand Hotel Mennagio - - but I didn't think it had "Grand" in the name. Could you be looking for this instead?

Grand Hotel Victoria
Lungolago G. Castelli, 7
I-22017 Menaggio (Co) Italy
Tel: 011-39-0344-32003
Fax: 011-39-0344-32992
e-mail: [email protected]
web: www.palacehotel.it/fghv.html

Best wishes,

Rex
Boy Denise, You are a tiger. Go to this site for Tremezzo: www.hotelbook.com
Are you aware of www.google.com to search and find almost anything. Try it for any hotel you are seeking.
Good luck !

Actually Bob, I am really more like a pussycat. I just get obsessive when I am trying to organize something by myself.
Just trying to the major things aranged so I can forget about my trip till sometime next May.
A posting by Julie dated 8/2 lists her favorite hotel as Grand Hotel Mennagio. She also lists the Hotel Victoria so it's not the same hotel.
No I don't usually use google but tried excite, lycos and dogpile.com which usually works for me. Will give google a try. Finally found the Excelsior Splendide (was a good price)as someone suggested but they only take weekly bookings.

Thanks,
Denise

You know, this is a job for - - I know this will sound so, SO, way too simple, but - - directory assistance.

Just call the operator and tell her you need directory assistance - - you can generally get directory assistance in almost every part of Europe not much different from what you would expect here in the US. You'll be connected to an English-speaking operator, and it will only cost a few dollars. and then, just call the hotel. It is very rare to be unable to find a hotel where the person answering the phone doesn't understand "Parla inglese?", "What is your fax number?" and/or "e-mail address?"
I don't understand why you couldn't find this. I read your post, did a Yahoo search on Grand Hotel Menaggio, it came up with one hit, and here it is: www.grandhotelmenaggio.com.

Incidentally, I stayed there in 1992 and liked it very much.

Denise,

I think you couldn't find the hotel because of the typo. It is the Grand Hotel Tremezzo, Via Regina, 8, 22019 Tremezzo (Lago di Como), Italy
Fax: (39) 0344 40201, Tel: (39) 0344 42491. Web site: www.grandhoteltremezzo.com - Email: [email protected]

The web site is very nice, looks like a great place to stay.

Best,

Leslie

Well, the typo may have prevented her from finding the Grand Hotel Menaggio, but she'll never get there if she goes to www.grandhoteltremezzo.com. That's an entirely different hotel in a different town. I'm sure it's very nice, but if Denise wants the Grand Hotel Menaggio, it's our duty to send her to the correct website.

Denise,

Here's the info on the Grand Hotel Mennagio:

Web site: www.grandhotelmennagio.com
Email: [email protected]

Address: Grand Hotel Menaggio, via IV Novembre n.93 22017 Menaggio, Lago di Como (Co) Italy

Telephone: 39 0344 30640
Fax: 39 0344 30619

Hope this helps.

People instead of bitching at each other or telling the person posing the question to use a different search engine, why not try to help out instead? Is it necessary for the sarcasm of some of you? I have no interest in either of these hotels, but it took me just a few minutes to find them. And, I did this because some Fodorites here have been very helpful to me in my search of information. Before you ever respond to a thread, why not take a look in the mirror first, and think about the response that you look for when you pose a question. My Mother always said, "THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK." I believe that the word "write" can be substituted here.

Leslie

I posted the one that gave the website address, the one that said Denise had misspelled Menaggio, and the one that said the Grand Hotel Tremezzo is a different hotel. I actually meant to be helpful. After all, I did give her the correct address, and I also stopped her from going to the Grand Hotel Tremezzo when she wants to go to the Grand Hotel Menaggio. At first, I truly didn't know why she couldn't find it; after all, you and I both found it right away. Then I thought maybe it was because she misspelled Menaggio -- this is not a sarcastic comment; maybe the real reason she couldn't find it is because she misspelled Menaggio. And the third post was necessary to correct the one that would have sent her to Tremezzo. I was doing all this with a little of my tongue in my cheek; my good-natured humor is sometimes misread as sarcasm. In any case, I hope Denise finds what she is looking for. All the while I was writing my posts, I was enjoying the memory of my stay at the grand Hotel Menaggio.

Leslie,

I used to do a lot more internet searching for people - - and it resulted in some vicious petty people making remarks like "I guess that guy has never been to Europe - - all he ever does is post website addresses!"

I shouldn't carry a grudge about this - - but it is just a warning to be thick-skinned if you get accused of spending too much time in front of the computer.

I should have noticed the mis-spelling; I wasn't sure of the correct name of the hotel myself. And of course, I can't be entirely sure that this is the hotel referenced by "Julie" on 8/2. But looking at the website, I can confirm that is the hotel I was thinking of - - and it is less than 50 feet from the ferry landing in Menaggio - - VERY convenient.

And I had more or less forgotten about this, but I think it is entirely true when they say (on their website - - under "Informations") that the (rail) station "is not far way - - probably less than 5-6 minutes' walk.

I really liked the GH Victoria - - this one might, indeed, be better.
Rex and Came,

Here are my responses to you. When I started typing my posts to this thread, I began to create them right after Rex's first post. I didn't see any further responses, nor did I bother to refresh the screen prior to my pushing "post my reply." By no means did I think that Rex's posts were sarcastic. However, I did find the post about inquiring possibly "Menaggio" being a typo to be flippant. But, Came, you did follow up with the email address. Lastly, Came, I'm not trying to "one-up" you here and it is not my intention to continue to beat a dead horse either since we have provided Denise with adequate information for her queries, but Denise's post queried both hotels in Lake Como, however, the typo in the hotels was "Termezzo", it should have been typed "Tremezzo;" "Menaggio" was spelled correctly.

I suppose I just don't understand why the comments here have to be so flippant. Sometimes, I cringe at what people write. I don't need to be thick-skinned, however, some of the comments are rude, callous, and down right ignorant. There are human beings reading these comments that have genuine feelings, and they should not be insulted.

Rex, I will admit I spend many hours in front of my computer, and, yes, I do have a LIFE. However, in the evening after work, in the confines of my own home, if I am not crocheting, reading a book, or watching tv, or doing something else that needs my attention, I spend many hours on the computer (even multi-tasking listening to music and watching or listening to tv) -- it is truly no one's business how much time I spend on the computer. I find being on-line, at times, to be my entertainment. So, Rex, kudos to you for being of continuous help to others. I have enjoyed reading many of your numerous posts. There's a line in a song from the musical "Stop The World I Want To Get Off" starring Anthony Newley (the song I don't recall), it is "I'm alright Jack, screw you all!" Rex, between you and I, that's the comment I always think of when I read a flippant, sarcastic and callous remark to any post requiring assistance or any post that provides valuable assistance that is then responded to rudely. I can only surmise that people that respond so poorly are jealous and green with envy. I hope that you shall continue to provide well thought out and informative posts. I know that I shall continue to do so.

And yes, Rex, in response to another one of your posts, I have been having a hard time finding some of the posts that I have created. In fact, one I created over a week ago, I was not able to find until this evening. And my only reason for trying to locate it again was to thank the person that responded kindly to my query. Thanks for creating that post, as I also thought there was something wrong.

Best,

Leslie

Leslie,

I apologize, too. I overlooked the question about the Grand Hotel Tremezzo. I seem to be kind of "wired" this evening (I have another PC going at the same time, and I'm working on a SQL Server assignment), and I shot from the hip. I should have just answered the question. I'm signing off now. I hope Denise has a wonderful time wherever she goes. I know she will because I love Lake Como. And I wish you, Rex, Bob, and everybody else out there who is helpful to other travelers a good night's sleep and many pleasant travels.

Sorry, just one more. No, Leslie, Menaggio was spelled incorrectly -- it was only shown in the title of her post and it's incorrect. Bellagio has two l's and one g, and Menaggio has one n and two g's. But, honestly, Leslie, I mean no offense and I sincerely wish all of you a "good night". Maybe if I get a good night's sleep I won't be so wired tomorrow.

Please don't argue. You all have been helpful. It was my mistake. I did indeed spell it wrong as you pointed out. I copied the spelling off the posting and it was spelled that way. I am sure that is why the search engines I tried couldn't find it and it wasn't one of the hotels listed on the sites for Lake Como.

Thank you again for your help.
Denise

Denise:
I stayed at the Grand Hotel Menaggio in 1998. It's well located right next to the ferry to Belaggio. Menaggio is much quieter than Belaggio, which was why we chose it. The hotel faces directly east, has a pleasant setting on the lake, and the staff is quite friendly. The rooms were spacious, but more plain than not. We would, however, stay there again.
