Hi everyone.
This needs to be a quick message. I got home late last night and need to go to work this morning. But I wanted to give everyone the update that both Mom and I are home and doing well. Her surgery went well and she is having a speedy recovery. In fact, the recuperation for this hip replacement has been far quicker and better than her prior surgery done in the US. I'll write more and share some of my thoughts (particularly about the service we received from Medjet and Travel Guard) later but I wanted to give everyone this quick update. And, of course, thanks to everyone for all their prayers and best wishes.

Wj- Thanks for posting. I wish you and your mother the best of luck. Since she has already had rehab before she knows what to expect. From what I have seen in working on a rehab unit, surgical procedures are getting better for hips and knees resulting in a little less pain and quicker recovery. Good luck.

Thank goodness! I am so glad having the surgery in France worked out well for your mother. My mother broke her hip when she was visiting me several years ago, so I know something of what you are both going through.

I'm so glad I came into the European forum today. I'm a regular in the Asia forum. First...Thumbs way up to Rex! Secondly...to wj1...I'm SO glad that your mother is doing better. I understand how scary the whole event of occurences must have been. Just two years ago for my mom's 75th birthday, I presented her with a ticket to Paris. She was in tears. Although I've been vacationing in Paris almost annually since the mid 70s, she has only been there once with me and that was exactly 25 years prior to her 75th birthday. So after her having had a huge surprise, formal birthday dinner with over 70 guests and everyone knowing about our upcoming plan to go to Paris, she started planning for upcoming trip everyday. Well, we boarded our United flight in L.A.(I from L.A.County)and headed for San Francisco where we were to change planes. Upon arrival in S.F. she took very sick...some medication that Kaiser had given her reacted badly in her system during the flight...altitude problem or something...anyhow....the clinic at S.F. airport was closed due to a holiday so we just went to the gate where the Paris flight was to leave and decided to wait and see what would happen. After about 45 minutes I decided that I would not have her flying on to Paris...not feeling well. So, I got a flight back to L.A. I didn't want her to possibly get sicker in Paris and end up having to deal with a hospital situation. So I rescheduled the trip for about a year later. Well, I took her to Kaiser Sunset for a medical checkup...angiogram... that my sister(a doctor, but out of state) had persuaded my mom to take and they found a clogged heart artery...so up went a stint...and she had to miss Paris trip #2 to recover. She's totally recovered now. Now, just last night I was sitting at home thinking of rescheduling the trip again...attempt number #3...when I was getting stressed out about what insurance to buy...I have regularly bought Travel Guard but am in a big battle with them at the monment...not medical...but over a Paris trip I took months ago and missed my connecting L.A.-S.F -Paris flight due to fog in S.F. thus having to pay for a hotel room I didn't use for 1 of the nights. Travel Guard/Mercury Insurance of Wisconsin has denied my claim for reinbursement of my hotel room and as of Monday, I've refiled with them. It's been a real headache.Months of craziness. So, I have been very apprehensive about buying insurance through them again until I find out the outcome of my situation. So, I was wondering if they have paid your claim? I want to reschedule the Paris trip for my mom, but need to figure out this medical insurance situation first. We also have insurance through American Express. But they pick up what one's main health insurance doesn't pay and someone stated that Kaiser only covers up to $1200. So, it might be a royal mess if I would have to file through both Kaiser and AmExp if something were to come up. Battling one company is enough.Happy Travels!

Here's a quick reply. First, check with Kaiser and see what your mom's policy says. My mother's policy supposedly will pay her outside medical bills in these circumstances without a $1200 limitation. She did however have to pay the hospital charges before she left and is supposed to submit a claim to Kaiser for reimbursement. I don't know whether different people have different coverages, so you should check with them directly.
Travel Guard is a whole different issue which I will discuss further when I have time. They were supposed to furnish a medical aid to fly with my mother back to the US. Everything went fine until they got to CDG at which time they were told that Air France didn't have a ticket for the aid. It was a nightmare because my mother had to fly on her own after being promised an aid. So far we haven't received a satisfactory explanation. I will relay more when I get some answers from Travel Guard although I can't possibly imagine what they can say that will satisfy me.
