need help with itinerary for Switzerland & northern Italy
We have 15 days in September for our trip, flying with frequent flier miles and renting a car. Having visited the major cities in Italy and Jungfrau area before. We want to revisit Murren, then add some other mountain areas for easy hikes. We love nature, history and great scenery, wanting to spend our time out doors. Spending a few days in each region. We will fly into Zurich. Our other goal is to walk Cinque Terre.
Now please help us decide where else we should go. Some choices are Engadine, Zermatt, Dolomites, Lake District, Chamonix.
Our loop drive will then take us down to Cinque Terre and hopefully a few Italian hill towns.
Flying back out of Zurich. Please help us decide what areas would suit us best for great walks in September. We will then concentrate on the best route. Thanks.

You might add the Portofino promontory to your walking routes. There are wonderful trails at all levels of difficulty. Camogli is a jewel.

You will not have to purchase expensive hiking duds for your Swiss hikes:

<<Some choices are Engadine, Zermatt, Dolomites, Lake District, Chamonix. >>
Of this list, the only place I haven't visited yet is Chamonix.
You really cannot go wrong on the rest. The Dolomites may be a little out of the way, on your route. You could easily visit both the Engadin and Lake Como on your way to CT.
Another possible option (but spreading yourself thin) would be to go to Zermatt, spend some time, then take the Glacier Express to St. Moritz (8 hour train ride) and pick up a car. You could visit both or either the Engadin and Lake Como on the way down south. It is a pretty drive between St. Moritz and Lake Como, too. Soglio would be a beautiful option for a visit and there is nice hiking there as well.
If someone told me to pick just one I'd have a hard time.

I'm sure when you were in Murren you visited, but we LOVED our time in Wengen. There is so much to do in that area when it comes to hiking and exploring. If you did not make it there on your last visit, you should try to spend at least a day there.
