The base is closed, fortunatly for the people living there. It's become rather silent. Lunch?, not really. Al Ponte for ice cream is still there. The monestary would be a possibility for lunch.

OK, so I may or may not get to a spa and get naked, and my first lunch recomendation is a monastary. Hmmm, Germany is getting pretty interesting...

You will have fun! Just don't expect too much in FFB.

You'll find a map under "Lageplan"

Btw. There is a grat spa in FFB (Die Amper-Oase), no need to get naked. Come to think of it, the brewery and beer-garden in Maisach are worth visiting.

Wow, that's the monastary? And a spa, too -- I'm really surprised! Too bad I can't read German.

Do you know if there's a place to turn in a rental car before we head into Munich?

Avis is at the Hasenheide. Long walk to the station or you'd have to take the bus. I would drop the car in Munich (Pasing/Laim). There are many offices at Landsberger Str. and it's only a few meters to the S-Bahn trains.

Based on your input, we've cut Black Forest and Baden Baden, giving us an extra day in the Rhine/Mosel area. I am interested in staying in St. Goar/Bacharach or Cochem as a base for exploring this area. Would one be better or more practical than the other?

Hi all,

Still working on my trip. I'm reading over all your posts again and again. So much to take in!

logos999, could you tell me where the old base in FFB was? Hubby was born there and would at least like to drive take a look.

It's at Marseillestr. It's still an army installation, so is may not be easy to get in. On the road from Olching, turn right toward B471, before entering town. Do not enter B471 but do straight ahead. The base is on your right. If you're already on B471, I think the exit's called FFB (=Fürstenfeldbruck) east.

jayne, depends on what you want. We just returned from the Rhine in May and stayed in Bacharach at the Rhein Hotel. Nice place, good restaurant. We really enjoyed Bacharach but made day trips only on the Rhine.

Last year, we stayed at Haus Lipmann in Beilstein on the Mosel. We liked HL very much also. We made a day trip to Cochem and Burg Eltz. Cochem is much larger than Beilstein and much busier. We actually liked returning to quiet little Beilstein at the end of the day. Several very good restaurants in Beilstein including Haus Lipmann.

We also spent several days in Gengenbach in the Black Forest. We REALLY enjoyed this little gem. The whole town could be explored in several hours and I highly recommend it to anyone thinking of going to the Black Forest. We did have lunch in Baden-Baden but quickly returned to Gengenbach.

Thanks you so much, logos! At least we can see the general area where the base was even if we can't get inside.

Betty, everyone raves about Haus Lipmann! We are considering spending one night somewhere on the Rhine and another on the Mosel, just to experience a taste of both.
We scratced Black Forest off our list for this trip based on advice from this board, but I have a feeling we will be back!

Our German itinerary is:
Arrive by train from Paris; rent a car.
2 nights Rhine/Mosel
1 night Rothenburg
1 night Fussen
3 nights Berchtesgaden
3 nights Munich

I'm headed to the beach tomorrow, but will be back to the planning in about a week.

Thanks again to everyone!
